Comments about Yellow Rose, The: The Complete Series:

I, along with many others, waited a long time to see this on DVD-- what took you so long? People have been talking about it on the Internet for years (blogs, comments). Everyone wondered why they only made one season (NBC). You can't beat Sam Elliot and that great cast.

Comments about Yellow Rose, The: The Complete Series:

This series begins as a Dallas imitation with a first story arc that shows it struggling, with only the strong cast to keep it going, with Sam Elliott a standout but Cybill Shepherd and David Soul fine, too. Initially, some of the secondary cast flounders -- Edward Albert stands around smiling at nothing in particular, and Noah Beery Jr and Ken Curtis have some painfully unfunny dialogue as a couple of old pards, while Chuck Connors is a one-note Snidely Whiplash villain. Susan Anspach, an attractive performer, just about drowns in a role that lacks focus and even purpose, and disappears. But then something surprising happens: the show comes together with Albert coming into his own with a strong performance, Beery and Curtis start to click, the callow young actor (Tom Schanley) playing the youngest son blossoms, and even Connors brings dimension to his evil character. Elliott and Soul tangle then bond, and seeing these two very different actors work so well together is a pleasure. Cybill Shepherd is flat-out gorgeous in jeans and cowgirl attire, really developing as an actor along the way. A fun, compelling story about a modernday cattle drive finds all the actors at home and confident in their roles, and the series is really cooking...when the network execs overhaul the series, and turn this soap opera into an episodic series. Since the premise wasn't set up to maintain self-contained episodes, the last batch of episodes just has bad things happen to the folks at the Yellow Rose. Most of the stories are pretty good just the same, and Elliott just absolutely shines, showing what a loss it was that he never had a series that lasted. By the final frame of the family sharing a meal at their table, most viewers will be very fond of this bunch and the show, and sorry to see it end. A good series for all its flaws and an example of how networks can inferere with a show just when it's hitting its stride, not having the sense to let it develop.

Comments about Yellow Rose, The: The Complete Series:

I remembered this series from years ago and because I'm such a big Sam Elliot fan, figured it would be better to own it than to just rent it. One of those guilty pleasures I can curl up on the couch with when I am lucky to have some time to myself. I just wish the series was longer.
