White Shadows in the South Seas (MOD)

The first of W.S. Van Dyke's famed filmed-on-location adventures (The Pagan and Trader Horn) tells a dramatic tale of foreign interlopers, a booze-sodden doctor and a rapacious pearl trader, who bring destruction to a vibrant Pacific culture.

A forgotten classic from the silent era!

Comments about White Shadows in the South Seas (MOD):

A stunningly photographed depiction of the encroachment of white "civilization" on the inhabitants of an idyllic South Seas island. Expertly helmed by then-journeyman director W.S. "Woody" VanDyke, who replaced famed documentarian Robert Flaherty ("Nanook of the North")after he abruptly left the project. Like "The Crowd" and "Freaks", "White Shadows" is one of a string of daring experimental films that MGM production head Irving Thalberg occasionally green-lighted at the studio, to his credit and sometime regret. Featuring no box-office names (although the delectable Raquel Torres will later appear in a Marx Bros. classic, "Duck Soup")and, particularly uncharacteristic for MGM, an unhappy ending, it is nevertheless well worth the look---check it out!
