        Comments about West of Zanzibar:

Bizarre. That word sums up this classic Chaney-Browning film, one of their most perverse (second only to THE UNKNOWN--see TCM Spotlight Set: Lon Chaney). Was worried that this didn't show up in the first Lon Chaney wave on DVD-R. Anyone who thinks that silent movies are jerky, overacted junk should see a film like this to discover how interesting they can be. Only downside is the music track: the old public TV score from the 70s which is a bit hokey. Otherwise, this film has to be seen to be believed; won't give anything away! Note that the talkie remake (without Chaney) is also out from Warner Archive: KONGO.

          Comments about West of Zanzibar:

Lon Chaney, Sr. and Producer Tod Browning bring us yet another fantastic classic silent production of 'revenge' and 'treachery'. Just when you think that you know the characters ... you are completely mislead ... and the plotline twists unravel at the slightest turns. Chaney and Lionel Barrymore are absolutely remarkable! In fact, I propose that this film (along with another similar silent classic Chaney film 'The Unknown') is perhaps one of Chaney's FINEST performances, ever! Director Tod Browning also delivers another solid, creepy film ('Freaks' being my all-time favorite). There is only ONE drawback to this DVD ... it is an utter shame that many of these classic films have not been (or cannot be) painstakingly restored to their former, timeless beauty. If you can overlook these flaws, then you will enjoy this film completely for what is is ... PURE EXCELLENCE! Chaney's portrayal as the twisted, cripple "Dead-Legs" ('Phroso the Magician') is pure brilliance.

            Comments about West of Zanzibar:

The DVD transfer of this classic Chaney movie is very nicely done. It is so nice to have on DVD and I for one appreciate Warner Archive making it available. The story is interesting as Chaney's friend has an affair with his wife and then shoves Chaney who falls from a second story balcony to a table below and breaks his back. Now paralyzed, and sorrowful over his wife's death, the child left behind Chaney assumes to belong to his former friend (played with zest by Lionel Barrymore). Chaney gives a terrific performance and the scene in which he discovers the girl is not his former friend's daughter, but HIS own daugter, is riveting. I highly recommend this one.
