What an amazing set. As a jazz and dance band 78 rpm collector, I could not recommend a better set. For the music alone this is worth the money, but we get 'A' list Broadway, Radio and Vaudeville performers of the day, so we get to hear and see this music as it was originally performed.

I particularly like disc #2, as it has the jazziest and most energetic performances of the group. Where else is one able to see and hear Ethel Waters, Adelaide Hall, The Nicholas Brothers (three times), Nina Mae McKinney, Sammy Davis Jr., Bill Robinson, and a group of great jazz bands on one DVD?

Disc # 1 has some great performances as well, from a young Artie Shaw with Roger Wolfe Kahn's Orchestra to The Boswell Sisters. We get to see the Lew Conrad Orchestra, a 1930s dance band which was popular on radio but only made two records. Some forgotten gems on this disc include the great vocalists Hannah Williams, Vera Van, Herriet Lee, Sylvia Froos and The Pickens Sisters. A+ !

One very unusual short is 'Yamecraw', The 1930 Vitaphone production.

The score is performed by a great jazz band and stride pianist. There is no dialogue, just the music. There is also a bit of operatic singing. The film is very expressionist in style with odd camera angles and distorted buildings / scenery. A strange short to be sure, very atypical of period Hollywood output.

only 2 out the 6 cds were even close to what I thought I was ordering. This was a Christmas gift for my husband who LOVES BIG BANDS and there was so little of big band music. He was disappointed because I could ony give him the order form on Christmas Day, which he was excited about, and then when the DVDS came and we started with nbr 1....well it was not at all what either thought it would be.

I was hesitant to buy this. I was pleased with the sound and video for the day. I didn't know they could do so well in the early days. If Warner Bros. brings out more I'll be buying them.

I was expecting to see big bands and jazz. What I got were bands being put in embarassing situations surrounded by third rate acts that made the bands seem irrelevant.

Comments about WB Big Band Jazz & Swing Collection (MOD):

Between the Deluxe "Jazz Singer" set with hours of rare early Vitaphone shorts and this release with many more hours of later shorts there is a great deal of interesting entertainment from a largely forgotten era not to be had anywhere else. If you are interested in vaudeville, tap dancing, hot jazz this is where it is at. Hopefully someday the whole vitaphone series will be available for viewing. Great entertainment history. Many thanks to the Vitaphone Project for putting the record collectors and film restorers together. I have known about the shorts for years but to actually be able to watch them is a real treat.

This is an excellent historical look at the Great Swing bands of the 30's and 40's. It would be a terrific introduction to the next generations of how music should sound.

This collection of jazz short subjects from the 1930s and 1940s (for the most part) is a wonderful time capsule of the popular music of pre-War America. The musical performances are very fine and its great to see the old film footage. I recommend this to anyone who enjoys big band music.
