Wait Until Dark (BD)

Dim the lights, check the door's chain lock, and brace yourself for a chiller as polished as the steel of Roat's blade.

Comments about Wait Until Dark (1967) (BD)(MOD):

WAIT UNTIL DARK WAS A TRIUMPHANT TURNING POINT FOR VIRTUALLY EVERYONE CONCERNED IN THIS SUSPENSE CLASSIC INVOLVING BLIND WOMAN AUDREY HEPBURN WHO IS FACED WITH PSYCHOPATHIC KILLER ALAN ARKIN, AND HENCHMEN RICHARD CRENNA AND JACK WESTON - AND ESPECIALLY DEMANDING B.F./PHOTOGRAPHER EFREM ZIMBALEST JR. FOR TERENCE YOUNG, LIBERATING HIMSELF FROM THREE JAMES BOND FILMS AS WELL AS THE IAN FLEMING-INSPIRED THE POPPY IS ALSO A FLOWER AND TRIPLE CROSS, ALSO RELEASED BY WB IN 1967, THE FILM WAS AN INSPIRED ADDITION TO HIS WORLDLY OEUVRE. THE SUSPENSE IS RELENTLESS IN THE BASIC SITUATION, LEADING UP TO AUDREY'S CONFRONTATION WITH ARKIN - AND REAFFIRMATION WITH ZIMBALEST. FOR ALL OF THE PERFORMERS, FROM HEPBURN TO ZIMBALEST, ARKIN,CRENNA AND WESTON, WAIT UNTIL DARK REPRESENTED A TRANSFORMATION INTO DIFFERENT AURAS OF ENTERTAINMENT BEYOND 1967. IT'S INTRIGUING TO PONDER WHAT ALFRED HITCHCOCK COULD HAVE ACHIEVED WITH THIS, HAVING PREVIOUSLY DIRECTED DIAL M FOR MURDER FOR WB IN 1954, FROM FREDERICK KNOTT'S PLAY (HE ALSO SCRIBED WAIT UNTIL DARK). UNQUESTIONABLY, ONE OF THE UNDISPUTED SUSPENSE CLASSICS OF THE 1960S AND THE GENRE ITSELF. YOUNG JULIE HERROD IS A SPECIAL STAND-OUT AS AUDREY'S AUDACIUOUS NEIGHBOR.
