Urgh! A Music War
It’s live and loud. It’s urgent and proud. It’s more than two-dozen young, energetic bands caught in the act and making the music and moments matter in hot, crowded, amped venues scattered across L.A., London, New York City and elsewhere.

Comments about Urgh! A Music War (DVD):

Although Warner Archives has a disclaimer that this film has not been remastered, it is in remarkable condition, which I attribute mostly to the care that was taken of the original tapes. One can only wonder how this film would look and sound if it HAD been remastered! Anyway, this is a fascinating and quite encapsulating look at the music of the early eighties, mostly consisting of punk, new wave, reggae, ska, and whatever other genre you want to choose. It was filmed live in two locations on the same day, one in Los Angeles, and the other in London, if I recall. While the artists involved don't always showcase their best or most popular song, it is entertaining, to say the very least. While I didn't care for Pere Ubu, Skafish, or John Otway, there are plenty of other artists that caught my attention, most of whom I was already familiar with, but had not seen perform live. My favorites were the Members, Go-Go's, OMD, Au Pairs, 999, and Steel Pulse. Klaus Nomi's performance is amazing. I like XTC but the song performed was not one of my favorites of theirs. If you love the music of that era, or are just curious about it, look no further than this DVD.

Comments about Urgh! A Music War (DVD):

If you loved the 80's or just love great live energetic music this movie is not only a must-own but the best of it's kind ever recorded! It will delight you with well-known favourite artists and introduce you to some amazing ones you may not know yet! From Pop to Punk and a little bit of everything in between there is not a bad performance in the bunch and I just wish the music scene today was as fresh and exciting as it was when this was filmed. Fantastic!

Comments about Urgh! A Music War (DVD):

This DVD features a great picture and stunning sound. Really wish it had chapters though - yes, it should be seen from beginning to end, but this is a concert film with dozens of bands, not a David Lynch movie. Recommended...and still hoping for a BluRay with extra footage.

Comments about Urgh! A Music War (DVD):

Long long lost to various formats and none of them DVD the incredible new wave/post-punk rock document Urgh! A Music War is finally available for all. There's really just nothing wrong at all with any portion of this release except for the unfortunate exclusion of Splodgeness Abounds' performance, though they are credited at the end. Highlights include The Cramps performing a defining Tear It Up, Gary Numan and his supercar for Down in the Park, Klaus Nomi's show-stopping Total Eclipse, Toyah Wilcox's Dance, Dead Kennedys busting out Bleed for Me, Joan Jett carving her niche in rock history with Bad Reputation, Pere Ubu's Birdies, and many many more. Really genius material and a form of musicmaking we're unlikely to ever see again. Highly, urgently, recommended.

I remember seeing this film on either Showtime or Cinemax in the early 80's. I have been searching for a good copy of this concert for over 20yrs. Thankyou Warner Brothers Archive for preserving a fine Concert Film!!!

One of my favorite VHS tapes for a long time, I'm glad to finally have this great film on DVD. The transfer is excellent. And even if it is missing one song, I can always go back and watch it on HVS if I really need to. Thanks to Warner for making this wonderful concert film available after such a long time being out of print.

Some great bands all nicely filmed the same way with multiple cameras. Some bigger names but plenty of underground bands just coming up. US vs UK - early Police - they start the movie and end it with big Roxanne number, Gang of 4, Echo & Bunnymen, XTC, etc. Plenty of LA punk of that time frame(early 80's) X, DK's, Cramps do a great freak out - long live the memory of Lux Interior!
Plus Devo, GoGo's, Oingo Boingo, Wall of Vodoo.

Bonus: Klaus Nomi in all his glory

Regarding the deletion of Splodgeness Abounds, I have to comment on this. I work at Warner Bros. as an audio technician and synced and recorded the audio to this title. The audio that we received did not contain audio for Splodgeness Abounds -- I am not sure why, but I am guessing that it may have had something to do with permission from the artist.
