Comments about Unsinkable Molly Brown, The (1964) (BD)(MOD):

Film version of Meredith Willson's stage success. It was meant to be follow-up to his MUSIC MAN, but wasn't anywhere near as effective. The film version makes that point even more obvious. Debbie Reynolds tries hard, but it's difficult being as naive and brash as Mollie is supposed to be without making her look forced and otherworldly. I don't buy it. I saw this in summer stock and bought it, because it was on stage and definitely an abstraction. Here, it is supposed realistic, in actual outdoor locations, not the backlot, with conventional characters around her, and she seems like someone from Mars. Some good, rousing numbers, but overall, a bit too much.

      A SPECIAL TREAT

Comments about Unsinkable Molly Brown, The (1964) (BD)(MOD):

The NY Times said "Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer appears to have struck a rich lode in "The Unsinkable Molly Brown," , , ,A 5 Star M-G-M show stopper - the last of the Great MGM Musicals - with Debbie Reynolds in her Oscar nominated role. Again from the NY Times review - "He's My Friend," the new number, may not be a musical milestone, but the dance that it provides for Debbie Reynolds and the entire cast is wildly exuberant, fresh and funny. In essence, Miss Reynolds's portrayal is equally explosive and her role gives her opportunities to be refreshingly tomboyish such as she has never had before. Since her role, as well as the others, is more grotesque than life, her unharnessed enthusiasm is a delight."

6 Academy Award nominations so the new Blu ray is a sight to be seen - wide screen and 5.1 sound this is a rich film experience based on the life story of the real Molly who survived the Titanic.
