Under The Rainbow

This colorful screwball comedy uses the premise of 150 little people playing The Wizard of Oz's Munchkins housed in one Culver City hotel - and indulging in some high-energy partying.

We first encountered this "Under the Rainbow" when it ran on HBO in the 1980s and we taped it off-air. The children loved it, as did we parents. The VHS tape wore out years ago, but when Warner released it on DVD, we jumped at the chance! It is a great story, a la its source material, and mixes fast-paced comedy, mild romance, and rapid action intrique. Chevy Chase and Carrie Fisher are at their best, and this was probably Eve Arden's (of "Our Miss Brooks") final film. Anyone who loves "The Wizard of Oz" (and who doesn't?) will enjoy this little gem!

Leaving aside the actual merits of the film itself-this is exactly what I was dreading when details of the Archive program first started filtering out.Picture quality is terrible. It looks as if the original film may have been somewhat soft and grainy. To these qualities, the DVD adds edge ringing (a thin ghost like fringe around all objects) as well as a blizzard of compression related artifacts in every frame. When I first viewed this, it looked as if the film was shot through some kind of filter giving the image an odd, herringbone-like texture. Pausing the picture and frame advancing shows this is entirely due to compression artifacts infecting every frame. This is sub-standard quality for 2009, and especially from a major studio like Warner. If you are viewing on a small enough display from a great distance you may not find this as objectionable. However if I receive any more titles looking this poor, I'm be putting a quick end to my Archive purchases. To be clear- the style in which the film was shot may not have yielded a visually impressive disc under the best of circumstances. However, my complaints are entirely with how poorly Warner has mastered the film (introducing the edge ringing) and then compressed it for disc (introducing the related artifacts). This is quality you would see on a $1 public domain release at [...].

      Comments about Under The Rainbow:

I love this movie. It isn't Gone With The Wind or some other classic. It is a fun, silly, make believe movie about what the Munchkins were doing when they weren't filming The Wizard Of Oz. Or no wait it isn't a make believe movie, it's a real movie about what "could" have happened after hours with the Munchkin cast of OZ.

          Comments about Under The Rainbow:

I have looked everywhere for this movie. When I was going to order on another site I found a review that said go to wbarchive instead. So glad I did. Great quality for an older, Unremastered movie, even funnier than I recalled, quick delivery, great condition. Itt said unplayable on some devices but nit played perfectly on my laptop. I'm sure that on an HD tv it loses some quality but if you are a fan of carrie and chevy and just like a good fun romp without all the modern bells an d whistles, Buy this.

            Comments about Under The Rainbow:

Wasn't expecting it to be enhanced for 16x9 so that was a cool bonus. Also the packaging looks nice. I know this isn't a great movie by any stretch but it holds a special place in my childhood so I was very happy when it became available.

                Comments about Under The Rainbow:

This was a huge flop in its day. As it never plays on television (for good reason) I thought it might be fun to see if time might have helped it some. Not in the least. Sometimes bad can be great. Not in this case. It remains incredibly unfunny, the worst sin a comedy can commit. While the concept, based on some actual fact about the making of The Wizard of Oz, is not PC it does have comic potential. This fails to capitalize on it on all counts.

                  Comments about Under The Rainbow:

Remastered it looks better than I remember it even on the screen. Chase is low key funny in this one while major lunacy surrounds him. Nice role for him. Carrie Fisher is wasted in this film as far as an acting role but provides some sex appeal when Billy Barty removes her dress and leaves her standing in her underwear. The real story is the outrageous story line. No high brow humor here, just good one liners, puns, innuendo and slapstick. A collection of old time Hollywood devices with some keystone cops mob chase by a bunch of little people thrown in for good measure. Nice one on an evening you want to just feel good.
