Comments about Travels With My Aunt:

This is one of my favorite movies of the 1970s, with wonderful performances and production values. However, this film does not shine on DVD because of color shift, blurry picture, and especially dirt and speckles--which to me is the equivalent of the snap, crackle, and pop you used to hear on old vinyl recordings. Very distracting! In fact, I've never seen such such speckles since the days of VHS movies. If this transfer is a remaster, as is claimed, I'd hate to see what Warner's was showing previously!

Comments about Travels With My Aunt:

Part of the problem is in adapting Graham Greene to the screen. He is almost as difficult as adapting Ray Bradbury with their prosaic style. Then there's the matter of Ms. Smith's performance which is vaguely reminiscent of her Miss Jean Brodie for which she would receive her first Oscar for the win. But veteran director Cukor does his level best to hold what elements are left together. On the plus side, however, the costumes deservedly won an Academy Award.

Comments about Travels With My Aunt:

I have read that Oscar winner Katharine Hepburn was initially signed to star in this film for her friend, George Cukor, but was replaced by Oscar winner Maggie Smith following demands by The Great Kate that changes be made to the screenplay. Whether or not that is true, Maggie Smith shows here that she could be as mannered as Hepburn and still manage to be touching, human and for a couple of hours, the center of the universe. This performance earned Smith an Oscar nomination for Best Actress, and it gives more than a glimpse into the superior character actress she would become later in her career, following her relatively brief but rewarding earlier years of above-the-title stardom.

Comments about Travels With My Aunt:

Although uneven, Cukor wanted Katherine Hepburn for this part, the film is what I like to call a "rainy day" film - a film that you would love to watch in a classic movie theater on a rainy day. Wonderful locations, arch performances, beautiful photography and music. Old school film making. It resides amidst my huge collection in a very special place - those films that can soften a bad day. Watch, you won't be disappointed.
