I used to love this show but it didnt really stand the test of time. the idea is still awesome but the voice acting and plots are just terrible at best. i know its an old kids show and all so i shouldnt expect much but now that im older it doesnt have the same effect on me. now it is just bland and only good for nostalgic purposes....pretty pricy too.

Comments about Thundarr The Barbarian: The Complete Series (1980-82):

I had just remembered this show from just one episode, the "Island of the Body Snatchers" that I had seen on this series so many years ago! Knowing that Alex Toth had designed the lead characters I ordered this 4 disc set to go along with other Alex Toth designed cartoons that I have on DVD. The 1st 3 DVD discs have episodes where the characters and story ideas don't add up well!

It seems to me that the directer and writers had a hard time trying to decide what to do with Thundarr and Ariel in this weird futuristic world! Characters run around a lot with colourful charcter designs and action but with no emotional build up or suspense. But on the 4th disc the last 6 episodes of the 2nd season are really pretty good! The character relationship of Thundarr and Princess Ariel emerges with Thundarr being the well meaning brute force and Ariel being the pretty brains of the oufit who tolerates her companion's hastyness!

These last episodes actually have entertaining comic book tales with a beginning, a middle and an end! Sometimes it takes a while for the series makers to decide just what is the best way to handle the characters and what stories to tell! So if you are new to Thundarr, I would recommend you watch disc 4 FIRST before you look at the earlier 3 discs! That way you're more likely to enjoy the show! The earlier episodes are not bad but they have no unity. They have their share of exiting moments but as a whole they are mediohcre!

The best episodes for me are: Island of the Body Snatchers: in which Ariel's mind is placed in witch's Circe's body and vice versa! City of Evil: An evil wizard enlarges a miniature city to full size with his powerful glove(gaunlet)! Last Train to Yesterday:Thundar helps a stubborn swamp urchin girl get her train through attacking mutants while battleling villain wizard Gemini! Master of the Stolin Sunsword: A phony wizard(magician) menaces a town and Thundarr has to recharge his weak sword! Trial By Terror: A young evil wizard has framed a friend of Thundarr for stealing and Prophecy of Peril: 3 women can bring down an evil wizard according to a prophecy and Thundarr and Ariel help the ladies make the prophecy happen!

All 6 of these episodes of the last half of the 2nd season show what the 3rd season could have been like if the show was renewed but alas that didn't happen!! So I'm glad I got this 4 disc set for the last 6 episodes! And also because it's interesting to see how Frank Paur and Boyd Kirkland got their start in the animation biz! Both of them are credited as layout artists on this show before becoming directers on Bruce W. Timm's BATMAN the animated series!

I'd like to get HB's FANTASTIC FOUR series from the sixties as well as THE ADVENTURES OF HUCKELBERRY FINN( a combination of live action and animation from HB)! Picture quality is very good on these dvd-r discs for THUNDARR THE BARBARIAN!

This show reminds me of how special Saturday mornings used to be. Thundarr is an awesome classic, and a head above the normal 80's fare. I'm so glad that this show is finally on DVD!

Comments about Thundarr The Barbarian: The Complete Series (1980-82):

This was, and remains, one of my favorite Hanna-Barbera shows, ever. The stories were innovative for their time, and the layouts and characters look magnificent. Having not seen this show in about 12 years or so, I can happily say it still holds up as one of the better Hanna-Barbera action shows.

Some complaints-It doesn't look like it was enhanced in any way, and can appear a bit shaky. Also, a lack of any special features is a downer, and the packaging is very basic. However, this is an awesome series, and it's great to have it all one one collection
