Hilariously absurd pre-Code oddity

About Me Movie Buff

Comments about Thirteen Women:

Myrna Loy is cast in a role so racist it would be offensive if it, and the whole film, weren't so hysterically preposterous. Loy plays a "half-caste Indian" woman obsessed with killing off former classmates from an LA school she attended so briefly the headmistress only barely remembers her. She does this, apparently, by first enlisting the aid of a celebrity "Swami" who sends each victim a personal horoscope detailing their ghastly, imminent death. Then, she uses what appear to be actual Jedi powers to hypnotize both the Swami and then most of her victims into offing themselves. Finally, she obsessively focuses on killing the adorable, cherubic child of one of the women, just because. I must admit, filling a rubber ball with dynamite (which the screenwriters seem to think explodes on impact) so the boy will kick it and blow himself to smithereens is a scenario I was most eager to see played out to its conclusion. But naturally, the stalwart police must save the precious white child from the nefarious clutches of the sinister brown lady, whom we know is foreign because Loy is practically smothered in eye shadow. Deeply awful but impossible to actually hate, this is a window into an alternate universe only the very cheapest and sleaziest of pre-Code exploitation fare can provide.

Comments about Thirteen Women:

THIRTEEN WOMEN is beautifully shot & produced, and an example of Loy's early "exotic" typecasting. Everyone else is unremarkable -- rote readings, ingenue acting, even the normally engaging Ricardo Cortez has no real purpose -- but Loy is uniformly terrible through the whole of it: not once are we ever convinced of her supposed ethnicity [upon which the entire plot hangs], nor does she ever appear involved in any of her scenes. It's as if some alien creature were CGI'd into the film, leaving the rest of the cast interacting with the actor who she replaced.

The result is a bizarre mix of melodrama and camp that fascinates -- even delights -- by its astounding failure ... the kind that has you calling people into the room so you can show them how bad it is. Eating popcorn while watching this film would probably pose a choking hazard, but there is a potential drinking game in the fact that the "Jo" character's name gets such frequent mention. Otherwise, a film which attempts to be a thriller with unintended hilarity

    Comments about Thirteen Women:

Creepy cross between a "Woman's Picture" and a "Horror / Thriller with an especially malevolent performance by Myra Loy and some really spectacular death scenes. As always, with Warner Archive, a very nice copy of a mostly forgotten gem.

The movie is over-the-top fun. Loy has been type-cast at this point and she really vamps it up in this "B" film.

          Clearly watch this for fun!

Brilliant movie for its time, I am sure, and best suited for audiences who enjoy a mix of the bizarre, violent, darkly humorous, supernatural, hypnotic and suggestive.

A wonderful pristine, clean and great sound quality for an old classic. Myrna Loy is convincing, mysterious and great in this early role.
