Comments about The Silver Chalice (MOD):

Sure, Paul Newman does look a bit at sea, and there are plenty of depressingly predictable moments and situations in an ultra-typical Biblical potboiler of the 1950's. But this 20th Cent. Fox film attempted something different with Art Direction and its at times greatly stylized sets, and the music by Franz Waxman is of concert hall quality.

Comments about The Silver Chalice (MOD):

Well... not exactly. But "The Silver Chalice", based on Thomas B Costain's English language historical novel, certainly isn't the worst entry in the Biblical film genre, (Rita Hayworth's starring vehicle, "Salome" and "The Sign of the Pagan" also starring Palance cops the coveted Razzie respectively). Extolling this films virtues then come easily. The heightened lighting. The stylized sets lending the film a stage-bound theatricality that sets it apart from other films like it released during the decade of the 50's. Movie trivia fact: Paul Newman was so embarrassed by his debut in this film that he had a letter of apology to his fans printed in the more prominent newspapers and entertainment magazines in Tinsel Town vowing never again to appear in any role where he had to wear a toga (or as he referred to it... "a cocktail dress"). Perhaps, it's just as well. He was among the many leading men be considered for the coveted role of Ben-Hur before Charlton Heston landed the part.
