Terrific, prime 1940's Warner Bros. melodrama with a splendid cast. Edward G. Robinson snarling away, John Garfield being his usual non-conformist and Ida Lupino as (what else?} a fallen woman. All three doing what they are perennially cast as, in a tight little non-contemporary character piece on the high seas. Completely satisfying to fans of the stars and literate enough to be of impressive to ornery mortals.

Michael Curtiz was one of the greats only you don't hear his name much. Still, he directed Adventures of Robin Hood, Captain Blood, Yankee Doodle Dandy, Casablanca, Mildred Pierce, Angels With Dirty Faces and many more. More than anyone, he was Warners in the 30s and 40s. Here he directs Edward G. Robinson in one of his most villainous roles, Wolf Larsen, skipper of The Ghost. Along for the ride is John Garfield whom Curtiz groomed to stardom in Four Daughters and would direct in one of the actor's last and best, The Breaking Point. Includes about 10 minutes that were cut from the re-release and TV prints for decades. A must.

A very excellent transfer - almost like seeing it for the first time (although It is one of my favorite films)
Seeing the print in it's full restored length is a real treat - much better than the chopped up 16mm prints that were shown years ago on TV. Warner Bros. is to be congratulated on it's on going effort to restore these classics to their original theatrical presentation. Looking forward to many more in the future!
