About Me Avid Moviegoer
The adaptation of The Hobbit to film I am sure was not easy. The film in many ways departs from the book. However, taken as a standalone - cinematography was excellent, the musical score equally so. I found some of the characters, like the Orc King, somewhat over the top. Many of the voices were also clearly the exact same people that played various orcs and other people in LOTR. That was certainly distracting. The initial film necessarily has a lot to do with background and exposition and so had some slow moments, but overall I enjoyed it a lot, and am looking forward to the next chapter.

Definitely some pacing issues, but not as bad as I expected from the reviews. Overall a very enjoyable film.
Great 3d experience

3d was impressive, visuals are great. As someone that's read the book a few times I thought it strayed too much from the story, I guess that's what happens when they decide to stretch it to three movies. Still a great experience and something I'd recommend

Love It For What It Is.

I was pleasantly surprised. Though the film was quite long, it was highly entertaining. So many disparaged it for not being true to the Hobbit. However, so many people wished to revisit Middle Earth and Peter Jackson gives us exactly that. A return to Tolkien's world. Viewing the movie in that context, then Jackson has supplied us with a wonderful return to the rich mythology of Middle Earth. The movie was well paced, well filmed and highly enjoyable. The only con is that quite a bit of it feels like a rethread or the Lord of The Rings. Still I am looking forward to seeing how this all plays out.

Recently, 20th Century Fox has announced plans to embark on a project based on the life of John Ronald Reuel Tolkien who has become a veritable font of inspiration for writers and filmmakers in creating their own fantasy realms and universes. Taking his cue from such literary giants as Jonathan Swift's "Gulliver's Travels" right on down the line to such imagineers as George Lucas in creating his "Star Wars" Universe for his epic sci-fi saga, Tolkien's fantasyscapes are perhaps the most detailed and fully imagined in literary history. And for a very long time no Hollywood producer/director dared even a serious treatment of Tolkien, (that's if you're willing to discount animator Ralph Bakshi's unique take on Tolkien's "The Lord of the Rings" back in 1978). Cue New Zealand's native son Peter Jackson who defied most Tolkien fan's expectations with the definitive film treatment of "The Lord of the Rings" Saga, even to earning the Oscar gold for Best Picture. Now his ambitious team of CGI technicians are tackling the first in the Tolkien series of books with "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" and the results are what's sure to be exceptional. "The Hobbit" is simply gorgeous to look at as such far off realms as "The Hobbiton" and "Rivendell" are fully realized in the most minute detail. "The Hobbit" series of books was, and, still is, required reading at most junior and high school levels. For those who are interested, J.R.R. Tolkien was born the 3 January 1892 and passed on the 2 September 1973 when most baby boomers were still attending high school.
