Comments about Tell It to the Marines:

I enjoyed this movie about how a hard-bitten sergent makes a man out of an arrogant recruit. This is one of the few movies in which Lon Chaney does not play a monster, and I enjoyed watching how subtle and engaging his facial responses were. We are reminded of how good an actor he was. He did not need the monster make-up to engage us.

Comments about Tell It to the Marines:

This is a great silent film. I usually don't care for silent films, but this one has good acting and is very funny. It's very Pro-Marine Corps. This movie was the first movie the Marine Corps ever endorsed.

Comments about Tell It to the Marines:

Thanks to the second wave of Lon Chaney releases from Warner Archive, I've finally had a chance to see the film that Chaney himself liked best. The combo of Lon Chaney and Billy Haines doesn't sound like it would work--but it does! The picture has comedy, action, and romance--although Chaney, as usual, loses the girl. This release features a new music track. Despite some corny pathos, the film is enjoyable.

Comments about Tell It to the Marines:

This film looks terrific on DVD and it comes with a nice cover too, a reproduction poster from the movie. The story is wonderful as this was one of Lon Chaney's best movies and in addition was one of his own personal favorites of his films. He plays Sgt. O'Hara, a tough by-the-book Marine who nevertheless has a heart of gold and wants to see one particular rookie, a real egocentric named Skeet Burns, make good. Well worth viewing and it holds up well and the battle scenes are few but well done.
