Tarzan's Greatest Adventure

Tarzan's Greatest Adventure is widely applauded as one of the best and most grownup films in the entire film annals of the jungle lord's exploits. It's "a superior action yarn shot on location in Africa, more adult than most of its predecessors.

After writing a warning review to potential purchasers of another Archive title that was poorly done, I'm happy to write just the opposite kind of review here.
My comments pertain mostly to the A/V quality of the disc, rather than the film itself. If you are unfamiliar with it, this film- along with Gordon Scott's follow-up Tarzan The Magnificent- are probably the two best Tarzan films ever made. The location shooting, more mature stories, and conviction Scott brings to the part, ensure they still hold up beautifully 50 years later.

Many people receiving this disc may be underwhelmed by it's visual qualities at first glance. I'm here to tell you Warner did an exceptional job translating an inherently problematical source to disc. Unfortunately due to the film stock used at the time, as well as the shooting conditions, this is as good as this material will look, baring an impractically expensive, time consuming restoration. As a viewer watching this content on a relatively higher end system (1080p front projector, 8' wide screen, 1x viewing distance) I very much appreciate the faithfulness with which Warner has transferred the film elements, and the care that was taken with their compression. I saw no ringing, edge enhancement, compression artifacts or authoring errors. This was as film-like a disc as is possible with standard definition.
Just don't expect the gloss, sheen, and sharpness of a modern big budget blockbuster. This is a fifty year old film, shot on location in Africa and with sometimes crude opticals, on notoriously unreliable film stock. That the film frequently looks as nice as it does is a near miracle.
This one is a winner and very highly recommended!

I saw this back when it first came out & it's still the best Tarzan movie ever. Plenty of action and suspense. Now to the DVD. The first one I got froze up right after the credits as did another in this set.[...]However there is a 30 day window for returns so I suggest you watch these BURNED dvds as soon as you get them. Hopefully they will last as long as pressed DVDS. No extras. Packaging is blah. Oh, and don't pay full price - wait for a sale!

        Comments about Tarzan's Greatest Adventure:

This Gordon Scott classic was the Tarzan movie that hooked me on the Lord Of The apes for life. No "Me Tarzan" garbage, he's like he is in the books, a well spoken, intelligent man who lives the law of the jungle. Anthony Quayle makes a great psycho and Sean Connery is a fantastic scumbag.

          Comments about Tarzan's Greatest Adventure:

By 1959, the film interpretation of Tarzan had finally matured and evolved back to the legend that Edgar Rice Burroughs had created early in the 20th Century: an anachronism of Western culture -- an intelligent and cultured man who chooses to live in the wilds of Africa, as far as possible from the burdens of civilization. Gordon Scott continued to be one of the best choices for Tarzan; and this film brings forth subtleties to which ALL of the preceding Tarzan films had never attempted.

First of all, goodbye to "Me Tarzan -- you Jane." Tarzan speaks very good English, with all the verbs and nouns intact. And there is NO Jane (at least, not mentioned -- and, in one particular scene, it is obvious that either Jane is long gone, or Tarzan has become -- um, somewhat of a cad. Or simply vulnerable). And Tarzan has also become introspective and philosophical -- quite a change from all other interpretations.

Tarzan is attempting to stop a boatful of killers who have just raided a native village without reason. He is accompanied by a foolish young thing, who has miraculously survived a poorly filmed plane crash. The duo track the riverboat upstream, attempting to evade the traps set for them by the killers.

The killers are led by Slade, superbly played by British actor Anthony Quayle, who would become even more famous in 1961's "The Guns Of Navarone." Slade is an old nemesis of Tarzan's, and admittedly a born psychopath -- a great performance, considering this is only a Tarzan film.

Also amongst the killers is pre-James Bond Sean Connery as O'Banion, a devil-may-care extrovert who seems to be along on the trip as sheer firepower; but it's fun to see the hints of 007 beneath the grime and bravado.

The silent self-examination after the culminating battle is unprecedented for a Tarzan film, something I had overlooked upon first seeing this film as a twelve year old. And, while the make-up is ridiculous, the cinematography has exceeded previous efforts, and the stunt-work is breathtakingly excellent.

What a wonderful addition to the Tarzan library -- I cannot recommend this film sufficiently enough. And you get to watch Tarzan battle 007 (kind of. . .) -- what more could you want?!?

                  Comments about Tarzan's Greatest Adventure:

This was not only Gordon Scott's best Tarzan picture, but it is one of the best Tarzan movies ever. There is a raw, visceral feel to the film that builds an intensity throughout the movie making the climax all the more interesting and satisfying. It is very reminiscient of the first two Johnny Weismuller movies before they became formulaic and generic in acting and story line. Gordon Scott portrays an Ape Man who not only noble and courageous, but even vengeful and driven and he conveys these qualities in a perfectly understated performance. Scott is showing us the real Ape Man of the books and not the Tarzan Hollywood turned him into and he does so with a renewed vigor. The cast boasts Anthony Quayle and a very young pre-Bond Sean Connery with a plot line that keeps the viewer focused with rapt attention. This is a must have if your a fan of Gordon Scott or Tarzan in general. I highly recommend it!!!

                    Comments about Tarzan's Greatest Adventure:

Finally released on video, TARZAN'S GREATEST ADVENTURE is a high mark for the series; for once Tarzan appears as he does in the later books, speaking coherent English yet with the savage streak which made Burroughs' ape man unique. This is a nice widescreen version and a pretty good print. I would have preferred an actual DVD, but this DVD-r is good quality, and a welcome addition to any adventure collection.

                        Comments about Tarzan's Greatest Adventure:

Probably the best Tarzan film since the first few MGM films starring Johnny Weissmuller. This Tarzan film is more adult than most of the previous ones in the series with top notch acting and a gripping story as Tarzan must hunt down Anthony Quayle and his henchmen (one of whom is played by a pre-James Bond Sean Connery). The quality of the picture on the DVD looks better than any of the prints that were shown on TV in the past and I highly recommend this DVD for not only Tarzan fans but fans of great cinema in general.
