Comments about Targets (PMT):

Tackling the question of gun control and the price of celebrity, two seemingly desparate plots, 1968's TARGETS still reonates today. An unhappy mentally ill man goes on a rampage with a gun, based on the 1966 Charles Whitman sniper case, while a unhappy well-known actor sick of fame tries to retire, but is hounded by those dependent on their "meal ticket." Their paths eventually intersect in a surpising way. Boris Karloff has never been better, and his role as the tired star was an autumnal triumph. The genesis of director Peter Bogdanovich's style is all over the film, his mentor Roger Corman taught him well. One of Corman's Karloff vehicles, THE TERROR (also starring a young Jack Nicholson) is featured to great effect. An uncreditted Sam Fuller also helped with the script. Look fast for Wayne Rogers in a phone booth. Highly recommended. (Contains violent gun deaths, not for kids or the weak-hearted!)
