Comments about Strawberry Statement, The:

A dated but charming movie from 1970, released days after the killings at Kent State and Jackson State, but not at all political: there are some overt as well as hidden critiques of the antiwar movement. The Kim Darby character and the love relationship are not sufficiently developed, but the soundtrack is memorable (Thunderclap Newman!), as are some of the vignettes and dialogue.

    Comments about Strawberry Statement, The:

Although somewhat uneven, a cool film about student rebellion that was true to the times and filmed during that period of student unrest. The best thing about the film is the amazing soundtrack featuring songs from CSN, Neil Young, Thunderclap Newman and others.

      Comments about Strawberry Statement, The:

Incredible stream of conscious love story set against the backdrop of the late '60s unversity level student zeitgeist. Based on the best selling book The Strawberry Statement: Notes Of A College Revolutionary, the film follows Simon James (author of the book is named James Simon Kunen)a somewhat lost in his own era young man, who gets involved with the student protest movement in an attempt to spend more time with a girl he's infatuated with(Kim Darby). The electricity between Davison and Darby is unlike anything ever committed to film. Behind the scenes, Davison and Darby fell in love during the filmming of The Strawberry Statement, and as we the audience see them together in the film discovering love and telling each other that they love each other for the first time, they're in fact telling each other for the first time as real people that they love each other, and it's captured here on film. In addition, the direction of Stuart Hagmann is a milestone for it's era, giving us these incredible sweeping camera movements, guerilla style verite, POV shot exploitation, as well as pre-MTV rapid fire music video editing, and the film also features one of the biggest music soundtracks in any late '60s studio film. The film is explosive, and it won the Palm d'0r at the 1970 Cannes Film Festival. In addition, the finale of this film, which is clearly an homage to the late Busby Berkeley, is one of the most incredible directorial achievements in the history of cinema. The Strawberry Statement is a masterpiece, a big bang microcosmic look down into this fleeting moment in time between two little dots in a much bigger universe.
