One of my all-time favorite films...finally on DVD, and looking AMAZING! This little RKO B-picture was something I stumbled across on TV years ago, and it captivated me. Over the years, it has gained a cult following, and I hoped against hope that a DVD release would finally yield a better print than the fuzzy, grimy old one that's been kicking around for years.

Now, thanks to the great Warner people, the film is sharp as a tack, clean, & comes newly alive. A taut murder mystery tale told with a novel flair, this is truly a must for anyone who loves film noir....and the film's pivotal character, portrayed with trademark terror by Peter Lorre.

Comments about Stranger on the Third Floor:

It may seem very tame by today's standards of blood and gore which are so commonplace in movies that no one is frightened by these special effects, yet, Peter Lorre is menacing and scary as all get out in this thriller about a serial killer running amuck in the neighborhood. He was one of the all-time great character actors! With the use of light, shadows and angled camera shots, this movie introduced movie goers to film noir.

Comments about Stranger on the Third Floor:

A very interesting, 'out off the box', piece of cinema. All the shadowy cinematography you expect to find in a noir, plus characters who may or not be what they seem. The dream sequence has inspired many a dream sequence today, and was ahead of it's time. Fine whodunit, with Peter Lorre doing...Peter Lorre! Ah, the studio era stars!

Comments about Stranger on the Third Floor:

Perhaps the first film noir, the classic German lighting (shadows, blinds,
shaded faces, Peter Lorre) make this a must see for anyone who is interested in this genre. Classic plot!

The image quality was a little shakey at the beginning but it improves greatly after the first few minutes. It is much better than the copy that was shown on AMC years ago.

Comments about Stranger on the Third Floor:

Long overdue DVD release of important "B" film, this RKO quickie with its nightmarish chiaroscuro effects predates the Lewton series, anticipating film noir with strong expressionist rendering for psychological effect (Peter Lorre's role brief but memorable). This is the best video version yet available in terms of visual quality, with complete logo/title sequence (often abbreviated) and exceptional clarity/contrast to benefit shadowy night scenes and astounding dream sequence.
