Back in 1997 when STEEL arrived in theatres, it was known that this version was a loose interpretation of the comic original. Those of you devoted Superman fans out there remember the story of how John Henry Irons took on the mantle of Steel following the (alleged) death of Superman after his battle with Doomsday. No mention of Superman or that battle is made in this movie. It was written to stand on its own and not be so much an off-shoot of the comic original. For the budget, the film was well enough executed. And fans of Mr. Johnson's work will note the Tenctonese grafitti on the Dumpsters which appeared in the ALIEN NATION television series he produced years earlier. STEEL is clean entertainment for the family that can be enjoyed by comic purists or those new to the superhero film genre.

Sadly, this movie is an example of how badly were many of the Comic Book adaptations in the 90's (Batman & Robin, Barbwire, Timecop, Tank Girl just to mention a few ones).

The whole product doesn't have the look or feel of a movie. It's just more like a low budget TV movie. Shaq proves that as an actor, he's a great basketball player. Richard Roundtree, Charles Napier and Judd Nelson are tottaly wasted here. one of the few reediming points is Annabeth Gish as Sparks, a very lovable sidekick. The title character doesn't have any connections to the Superman series (Besides a couple of references to the DCU and Shaq's tatoo of the Superman shield.

This movie is just for completists of the DCU motion pictures, Shaq fans or movies that "are so bad that they're so good".

      Comments about Steel (MOD):

This movie is fantastic. I don't know why it wasn't released in stores as a regular DVD. I thought Shaquelle O'Neal did a great job playing John Henry Irons/Steel. Annabeth Gish was fantastic as his girlfriend, Sparks. The action was great overall. I would recommend this movie for anyone who's into the comic book character Steel
