I saw this movie when I was a kid on cable tv, and it struck a chord in me. It's funny, poignant, touching, and yet there's never been a movie like it. Steve McQueen plays a completely different character than what he was known for, and I applaud him for it. The rest of the cast, including Jackie Gleason, Tuesday Weld, and Tony Bill are terrific. It's about time this film has been released in DVD format.

A great movie that was destroyed by editing, decades after it was released. Key developmental scenes have been shortened or eliminated entirely. Even Henry Mancini's original theme song has been replaced by another composition that is used later in the film. The original run time of this film is 96 minutes. It's incomprehensible that they would ruin this film to save 8 minutes.

The first time I saw this movie is when I was in the Army. And its more or less the way the Army was at that time. Henry Mancini music score was perfect.

Comments about Soldier In The Rain:

I'm thankful for the Warner Archive releases and will continue to buy them. This copy of Soldier in the Rain is clear and in widescreen. And i'm happy with this,or at least till they release a better and more complete version. This one is cut.
Scenes like Sgt.Lenahan ready to punch Eustis & stopped by Jackie earlier in film is missing. The ''Rootie Toot'' scene between Steve and Tom Poston is gone. And a earlier scene w/Steve & black
actor Rockne Tarkington also edited. The VHS release years ago was the same.

Comments about Soldier In The Rain:

I remember reading the novel that this film was based on by William Goldman when I was a kid. I saw this film soon afterward. The book was much better.
In this rather short, black and white film, Steve McQueen plays a not very bright supply Sergeant on an Army base somewhere down south. He is supposed to be getting out of the Army in 2 weeks and spends his time thinking of Ralph Kramden-like, crazy get rich schemes. His best friend is a Master Sergeant played by Gleason, who is very obviously his intellectual superior. I'm not sure what Gleason does but he spends most of the time in his air conditioned office, drinking cold Pepsis from his private machine and smoking cigarettes. (As a matter of fact, Gleason is smoking a cigarette in virtually every scene in this movie. It is not surprising that he died from inoperable cancer.) Still, Gleason is the best thing about this movie.
The supporting cast includes Tuesday Weld as one of McQueen's not very intelligent high school girlfriends. Most of her role consists of her calling Gleason "fat," "jelly belly," etc. Tony Bill appears as another McQueen bizarre army buddy, Tom Poston is a rather stupid Lieutenant, Ed Nelson is hateful as a vile, vicious military policeman who loves to make McQueen's life miserable. There is a brief appearance by Adam West as a Major.
The film was produced and directed by Blake Edwards, not long before his "Pink Panther" films. There is very little plot to this film, just a series of incidents leading towards a sad, unexpected conclusion. The music is by the great Henry Mancini, although not one of his greatest scores.
This is an okay little picture, nothing more, nothing less. As stated previously, the best thing about it is the "Great One," Jackie Gleason.

Comments about Soldier In The Rain:

I cannot say more how this movie has stayed with me decades after seeing it. The emotion and expertise in which Jackie Gleason and Steve McQueen plaed their roles was absolute mastery. This movie leaves a melancholy note that draws you back for repeated study.

Nice copy by Warners Archives. The packaging was simple. I wish they used slim packs when the only thing you get is the disc.

As for the movie: Great cast, creat crew (written by Blake Edwards, music by Henry Mancini). Most coming of age movies use adolescents, this one used Steve McQueen

Comments about Soldier In The Rain:

[...]Soldier In The Rain is one of those little gems of a movie with two great actors in their prime. This very well may be Jackie Gleason's finest acting moment. Yes, even better than the Hustler. And McQueen is spot on. If you are looking for a movie that grabs you and leaves you satisfied at the end, order it. By the way, the video & audio quality is really good. Highest recommendation!
