      Comments about Sam Benedict (MOD):

For Edmond O'Brien fans, the release of his 1962-63 TV series, 'Sam Benedict', is a godsend. Based on the experiences of real-life San Francisco criminal attorney, Jake Ehrlich, O'Brien was at his best portraying the flamboyant and opinionated lawyer. Ehrlich served as advisor to the show and approved of both O'Brien and his portrayal of him. The series was a homecoming of sorts. Brought to the show were masterful actors, such as Ruth Roman, Ida Lupino, and Nancy Kelly, who had co-starred with O'Brien in some of his earlier films. There are 28 episodes in this collection. Not only do you find here many top-notch acting veterans, such as Burgess Meredith, Eddie Albert, and Claude Rains, but even up-and-coming stars of the future, such as Michael Parks, James MacArthur, Greg Morris, and Kurt Russell. Even O'Brien's daughter, Maria, takes on an endearing role with her father in one episode. The performances are absolutely top-of-the line, the best to be found in the 'Nothing Equals Nothing' episode featuring Nancy Kelly ('The Bad Seed'), as a murderess being defended by O'Brien. This is the only episode in color. You will never see a finer pair of performances from two extraordinary actors. Hands-down, it is the series' finest moment. This episode alone is worth the price of the set. The scripts were creative and often thought-provoking. O'Brien's co-stars on the series were Richard Rust, as his law partner, and Trudy Tompkins, as his secretary, both fine actors. It is, indeed, sad that the show did not continue into additional seasons, as what we do have here is a rare treat to those who love great actors and great acting.
