Comments about Romance in Manhattan:

Francis Lederer and Ginger Rogers make a bright, engaging couple in this 77-minute outing. 23 year old Ginger looks very pretty, especially in the early scenes, thanks to cameraman Nick Musuraca and (I guess) makeup artist Mel Berns. Co-star and first-billed Francis Lederer confidently carries the film with his charm, and it's easy to see why he would be a big success in the US outside of films. The politics get iffy in this film when he resorts to being a scab taxi driver (how he got a driver license is not explained), and this is contrasted with his decided unwillingness to return to German-threatened Czechoslovakia. The everyday kitchen-sink aspects of the films work well (a refreshing change from the unconvincing and occasional rear projection), and an intriguing subplot involves the activities of Ginger's younger brother, played by Jimmy Butler. If you also are a fan of films of this time, you will recognize lots of the supporting players. The resolution of all this is quite pleasing.
