      Comments about Romance in Manhattan:

Happened to catch this on TCM, and had to buy it. Lively, moving, entertaining story, with early Ginger Rogers (always terrific), and the wonderful, charming, gorgeous Francis Lederer in what should have been a star-making role. (There were actually plans to promote him heavily for stardom, but his studio benefactor died, and the remaining bigwigs didn't appreciate what they had...fools.) He plays an intrepid immigrant with engaging good humor and a -- how to characterize it? -- a strong yet sweet manliness that's truly irresistable. And the plot, about the search for work, love and home in Depression-era New York, is completely engrossing. I absolutely love this movie!

      Comments about Romance in Manhattan:

Francis Lederer and Ginger Rogers make a bright, engaging couple in this 77-minute outing. 23 year old Ginger looks very pretty, especially in the early scenes, thanks to cameraman Nick Musuraca and (I guess) makeup artist Mel Berns. Co-star and first-billed Francis Lederer confidently carries the film with his charm, and it's easy to see why he would be a big success in the US outside of films. The politics get iffy in this film when he resorts to being a scab taxi driver (how he got a driver license is not explained), and this is contrasted with his decided unwillingness to return to German-threatened Czechoslovakia. The everyday kitchen-sink aspects of the films work well (a refreshing change from the unconvincing and occasional rear projection), and an intriguing subplot involves the activities of Ginger's younger brother, played by Jimmy Butler. If you also are a fan of films of this time, you will recognize lots of the supporting players. The resolution of all this is quite pleasing.
