        Comments about Rhapsody In Blue:

A group of us live together and have a movie night a month. I chose this one. Everyone hated to see it end. We are all over 65 and it brought back wonderful memories of our younger years. I would highly recommend this to any real fan of music, history and real clean entertainment.

          Comments about Rhapsody In Blue:

My only criticism of this movie is that it plays far too loosely with history. It's 75% fantasy/fiction and maybe 25% factual. There was nothing boring about Gershwin's life (unlike with Jerome Kern's in TILL THE CLOUDS ROLL BY). They didn't have to veer so far away from reality.

            Comments about Rhapsody In Blue:

However inaccurate the film may be, it is above all one long rhapsodic love-song to the music of George Gershwin, and in that regard it excells! The film contains performance after performance of some of his best-loved songs, the entire Rhapsody in Blue, a music-video to An American in Paris, the Cuban Overture, the Concerto in F, the seldom heard Blue Monday Blues, and a background score by Max Steiner utilizing themes by Gershwin. The guest-star performers are legendary, especially the appearance by jazz pianist-vocalist Hazel Scott. And, as a surprise bonus not mentioned, this disc contains an OVERTURE, not previously available, even on my 16mm print!!!

              Comments about Rhapsody In Blue:

RHAPSODY IN BLUE finally gets it due. I have seen this film countless times on TV and owned it on VHS and laserdisc. This new remastered version from Warner is revelatory! The film looks amazing and sounds incredible. You can hear every instrument in the peerless Warner orchestra, and with a film that is all about the great Gershwin and his immortal music, such a treasure is something to shout about.

Robert Alda had a difficult task in taking on the role of Gershwin, and he does an outstanding job. The rest of the cast is also superb, but no one more than Oscar Levant, playing himself.

The quality of the film is SO good now that it is easier to spot the trickery used in the special effects that make it look like Alda himself is playing the piano...that's how crisp and clear the image is. Immaculate!

...and to see Jolson re-create SWANNEE, Anne Brown, the original BESS from the 1935 Broadway production of PORGY AND BESS...with such great quality, underscores the importance of this new DVD.

Best of all Warner has restored a mega-overture that precedes the film, probably as it did upon opening in prime-location engagements in 1945.

Don't hesitate to pick this up. It's a winner!

              Comments about Rhapsody In Blue:

Of the many composer bios that were produced during the "Golden Age", this is my favorite, so I'm grateful that Warners has finally released it on DVD with high quality picture and sound. Yes, the movie is about 75% fiction, but who cares when we get to enjoy 25 of Gershwin's best songs and compositions---all presented with elegance and great production value. As an added bonus, many of the pieces are performed by the artists who originally introduced them (Al Jolson, Paul Whiteman, Hazel Scott, Anne Brown, etc). Robert Alda (yes, the father of Alan) is most impressive in his movie debut, and Joan Leslie brings her usual vigor to one of the fictional characters.

For today's young people, who grow up thinking that popular music is all electric guitars, drums and mumbled lyrics, this movie could be a revelation. And for those who think classical music is boring, check out the title piece, with its wonderful infusion of jazz motifs.

While the storyline does get a little soapy from time to time, it is mostly engaging as connective tissue between the many musical sequences. Despite the movie's length (see below), it can only touch on the incredible body of work that Gershwin packed into his short life. However, if you listen closely to the background music, you will hear even more of the Gershwin melodies.

This DVD runs ten minutes longer that the usual theatrical version (2:31 instead of 2:21), and that is because the film begins with a ten-minute "overture" which presents an instrumental medley of his works. Although the movie was cut down from a longer length for theatrical release, I have my doubts that it ever had an overture---especially one this long. I tend to think this is the audio track from one of Warners' musical shorts. Regardless, it provides a nice preview of the great music to come.

                Comments about Rhapsody In Blue:

Although Hollywood has "expanded" on the life of George Gershwin - this is still one of my favorite films, starring Robert Alda, a much underrated actor. Plenty of great music -including the overture, which had been excluded in previous releases. Another WB Classic.
