          Comments about Reluctant Debutante, The:

One of my favorite films. I waited to do this review until I watched this remastered DVD to make sure the quality stands up. It does. A view of London in the 50s. And thank goodness it's widescreen. But that's not what makes it a great film. (Others have described the plot, so I won't comment on it.)

Kay Kendall (who died way too young) was one of Rex Harrison's wives and married to him when this film was made. They play well together. Kendall mostly had a stage career, but luckily there is film of her available.

Kendall steals the show in this little gem. Her scenes are hilarious. Harrison does the "Lord" thing quite well as the straight man for Kendall. He still gets in some funny bits of his own.
Even Peters Myers as the stuffed-shirt member of the Queen's guard does his one-note speeches with aplomb.

I don't quite cringe when Sandra Dee and John Saxon are reciting their really dumb lines, and their characters are just about superfluous. But if you put yourself in the time (Hayes Code and nothing overt in the romance department), you can see that Sandra Dee was actually a pretty good actress. She gets away with the naive bit, followed by the awakening to true love pretty well. Just ignore the weird look on Saxon's face. He did okay with an awkward role.

Lansbury is a hoot as the jealous cousin and mother. Her scenes with Kendall are fabulous.

The sets are gorgeous, the scenery breathtaking, and the gowns sensational.

Vincente Minnelli was a very good director. He does great justice to the widescreen format. This film should be watched once for the comedy, and then again for his directing and the cinematography. In some scenes there are three main characters doing separate things. It's hard to keep up. It must be watched more than once. Each time through there is comedy that was missed the first time round.

Kay Kendall had a short, but unique career. She was beautiful...and very, very funny. From her first appearance, in a film called "Genevieve"
(where she played a model who got tipsy and played the trumpet with the hotel band)...she was REQUIRED to have a scene (or two) where she was tipsy. The Reluctant Debutante..well, it has the required tipsy scene for Ms Kendall...it also has a handsome and talented cast, and excellent script, and direction by Vincent Minelli. If that does not tell you what you need to know...you probably do not want to know anyway. I can assure you, you will enj0y this film...and that is NOT a treat.

The remastering doesn't seem as detailed as the remastering they do on the mass market DVD's. There were still stratches and pops and color fades in this print. I wonder if by Remastered Warner is referring to sound quality rather than picture quality?

              Comments about Reluctant Debutante, The:

I love this movie and this review isn't so much about the movie as it is about the difference a remastered copy makes to this movie. I had a dvr'd version and old vhs tape of this movie and the difference is beautiful. It's always looked washed out, it didn't stop me from enjoying the movie as it's a funny, engaging and cute story. Kay Kendall is a comic genius but to see the beautiful costumes as they should be seen really is something else. If you like this movie don't hesitate to treat yourself. I've been waiting for this to come on dvd for years and for it to be so improved is a real treat.

"Delicious" is the best word to describes this fluffy piece of late 50's entertainment, with maxiumum MGM gloss, Cinemascope, and a perfect ensemble cast. Arguably Kay kendall's best role. Beautiful original 2.35 transfer - but hey Warners! Why no stereo? The film's tech specs indicate Perspecta (Metro's stereo) sound.
