    Comments about Private Lives (MOD):

Norma Shearer was MGM's Queen of High Drama but, here, we see just how versatile she truly was when she tackles Noel Coward's brilliant "Private Lives". Shearer and Robert Montgomery play off one another superbly as a couple who have divorced and have remarried. They are upper crust but fight constantly. Both actors are excellent and play off each other superbly. Reginald Denny is well-suited to his role, but Una Merkel is quite miscast. Nevertheless, the film belongs to Shearer and Montgomery and they shine brilliantly. This is a must for any admirer of Norma Shearer who was a great actress. It is hilarious!

      Comments about Private Lives (MOD):

I LOVE this movie. It's a thorough delight, from start to finish, with spot-on perfect performances by especially Norma Shearer, Reginald Denny, and Robert Montgomery, sparkling sophisticated, endlessly witty dialogue, truly hilarious comedy, and a GREAT marital fight for the ages! You just can't go wrong with this terrific movie! After now more than 80 years since it was made, Private Lives still 100% holds up in every way, still feeling entirely fresh and timeless. Picture and audio quality are very good for an unrestored film of this vintage. No problem whatsoever. In my opinion, this is a movie that would delight and thoroughly entertain anyone. Get it and enjoy!

      Comments about Private Lives (MOD):

Ah, what is life without a little marital whimsy? Especially when explored by "The Master", Noel Peirce Coward. Under his acerbic pen connubial bliss is often overdue for a well-deserved spanking. Sparkling and sophisticated, "Private Lives" is as effervescent as fine wine. It's never out of step or style. And you couldn't get a better pairing than Norma Shearer and Robert Montgomery. The acclaimed playwright would again visit the conjugal domain in another celebrated play, "Blithe Spirit" which would also become an Oscar winning film in 1945.

The more I watch this movie the better i like it.
The balcony scene is a great mix of norma's silent talent and talk talent, almost the whole scene Norma doesn't say a word, does all her communication with her eyes and face like she is in a silent movie. But yet she does more without saying anything then most actresses do saying pages of dialect! A true classic actresses!

          Comments about Private Lives (MOD):

Like the Noel Coward play on which it is based, this film requires a sophisticated adult audience. Norma Shearer and Robert Montgomery play off each other beautifully, and the reframing of the apartment scenes to a mountain lodge actually heads off the let down some critics have compained about in the play's second act. Image quality very good. Really nice to have this underrated classic available in a decent print.

            Comments about Private Lives (MOD):

Anyone familiar with classic movies knows that Norma Shearer was a fine actress--as in DRAMATIC. However, her performance in Private Lives shows Norma Shearer doing screwball comedy complete with physical comedy. Shearer truly lets herself go, and it's a joy to behold. The pace slows slightly in the second act, but the overall effect of the film is delightful. This picture is truly a revelation to those of us whose familiarity with Norma Shearer has been limited to The Women, The Divorcee, Marie Antoinette, and similar pictures.

              Comments about Private Lives (MOD):

This is an absolutely brilliant comedy and superbly adapted for the screen. Norma Shearer proves she was far more than capable of physical comedy as well as drama. She is the perfect Amanda and Robert Montgomery shines in his role. The mountain climbing bit took away valuable screen time but it is brief. Reginald Denny is well-cast but Una Merkel, a marvelous actress, was miscast and Leila Hyams or Anita Page would have been preferable. Nevertheless, the film belongs to Norma Shearer and Robert Montgomery and it is as deliciously funny and entertaining as it was when filmed in 1932. I love this film and I do hope Warner will release more Norma Shearer films. She was a truly fine actress.

              Comments about Private Lives (MOD):

At last! It's here! This film version of the Noel Coward Classic comedy of mannners has molded on the shelf for far too long. It's a marvelous film, full of witty dialogue and situations. Norma Shearer is perfect as Amanda, her cool elegance hiding the tiger underneath. Robert Montgomery in one of his early film role is fine as Elyot chase, though he tries a little too hard. Having played Elyot on stage, I know that no effort is necessary, you just say the lines absolutely honestly and get big laughs. This film is unusual for the time in that the second act of the play is a duologue for the two leads; not common at this time when films were thought too static and quick cuts and fast pacing were used to speed them up. the shift from a Paris flat to the chalet is unnecessary and rather silly. Why see such poised, well-dressed, sophistocated people climbing an obviously fake mountain? But none the less, it comes off. Reginald Denny is perfect as Victor, who always looks as though he's sitting on something sharp but doesn't dare tell anyone. Una Merkel, lovely, competant actress that she is, comes off weakest. she's not quite believable as a prissy english bride. the film's sets are fantastic;I myself could live out the rest of my life in either of the art-deco hotel suites at the beginning. all in all a terrific entertainment. I never unstood why this was never remade. There've been so many revivals. I'd have loved to have seen Maggie Smith as Amanda after her London and Broadway triumph do a new version. Ah, well, I;ll content myself with this one and you should to.

              Comments about Private Lives (MOD):

A wonderful adaptation, though I could have done without the alpine hike and setting of the last two-thirds. Norma Shearer is simply wonderful ,and Robert Montgomery too, though he seem to be trying to be funny. Having played his character on stage, I know that all you have to do is say his lines and mean them and you get huge laughs. Reginald Denny is marvelous as Victor. He always looks like he's sitting on something uncomfortable. And Una Merkel is lovely, although not completely convincing as a young English bride. The settings are fabulous, I could easily spend my life in either of their amazing art deco honeymoon suites. All in all a wonderful film. Disregard the stupid "Sollocks" joke at the end and you'll love this movie. I'm thrilled it's out on DVD finally and I'm rushing to find where I can get it.
