When I saw Pretty Maids All in a Row in 1971 I remember it as just an OK murder mystery. The changes in society since then have turned it into much more. It's now a historic time capsule of the social/sexual mores of the late 60s/early 70s. Watching it now I laughed more than I have at any movie in years. Rock Hudson and Angie Dickinson both display the personal appeal that made them popular stars, and Roger Vadim shows his affection for teenage curves. If you like Russ Meyer's Beyond the Valley of the Dolls, you'll like Pretty Maids All in a Row.

Offbeat, softcore sex comedy/murder mystery from Star Trek's Gene Roddenberry. Hippy high school counselor Rock Hudson is the weak link in this "lost" film from 1971. Broad comedy is undercut with a dark, serial killer sub-plot. The best analogy I can think of is Three's Company meets Heathers. Sound good to you? Otherwise an interesting cast and the DVD looks really good...so throw away those pan-and-scan VHS dupes!

Comments about Pretty Maids All In A Row:

When I hear that Gene Roddenberry - Father of Star Trek - has written a sexual mystery that features Rock Hudson, Angie Dickinson, and Telly Savalas all under the direction of Roger Vadim, I don't need a neon sign blinking "TRAIN WRECK" to know that I should slow down and take a peek! In terms of the kinds of sexual insensitivity that could only exist in the 70's, this movie doesn't disappoint (and I LOVE the 30 year old Playboy Playmates posing as High Schoolers. This movie made GREASE seem reasonable). But when it comes to plausible characters doing things in a coherent and interesting manner, well, there it disappoints in spades. In fact, the whole movie feels like an ABC Movie of the Week, but the flashes of nudity and bawdy language quickly remind you that it's not. And really, if you miss the ABC Movie of the Week style, or horrible scripts being performed as if they were products from Shakespeare himself, then this might be for you! This film is such a misguided product of its time; I can't blame anyone for being curious enough to watch it (and if you do watch it, try to imagine the pitch session for this relic! It's amazing that it ever got made). I only wish that MST3K was still around to lambast it as it certainly deserves that kind of treatment.

Comments about Pretty Maids All In A Row:

I will confess to being a first time viewer of the film. I like dark comedy and this is that, but it is also a commentary on the sexual values of the time. This film was made in 1971, free love and a distrust of the establishment. I don't think this film could be made today with teachers going to jail for seducing student. Bold, wicked fun. A comedy about a serial killer is hard to pull off but they do a good job.

Comments about Pretty Maids All In A Row:

I saw this in the theater when it first came out. I only knew it was a murder mystery and that Mr. Roddenberry was involved with it. I found it kind of creepy when I saw it. It was supposed to me funny and sexy, but I didn't find it so. I think we would find it even less appropriate nowadays. Don't get this just because of Mr. Roddenberry.

This drive-in movie classic retains its original innocence, something not found in many of today's more jaded versions. The dvd does not work in many dvd players, so be prepared to watch it on your laptop or desktop.

Highly entertaining movie due to the partial nudity and absurdity of the plot. My husband (especially my husband) thought the movie was a hoot.

Comments about Pretty Maids All In A Row:

Great little movie that hasn't been available for a long time. Not only does the film offer great performances, producer and screenwriter, Gene Roddenberry has fashioned a witty, very "politicaly incorrect", black comedy. French Cinema's notorious "Svengali", Roger Vadim, directs with style and visual flair. Several of the minor characters are actors who had played parts in Roddenberry's "Star Trek", including "Scotty" James Doolin and William Campbell. The video transfer is overall, the best I've ever seen on this title. Recommended!!!

Comments about Pretty Maids All In A Row:

Great little film penned by Gene Roddenberry of Star Trek fame. You will see Jimmy Doohan (Scotty)talk without his Scottish accent. Also on hand is the actor who played the Klingon Commander from Trouble With Tribbles and Trelene, William Campbell. Rock Hudson is smooth as silk as the student seducing maybe Killer. Telly Savalas, in a pre Kojak role is the Police Inspector. Lovely and sexy as heck, Angie Dickenson plays another teacher with lechery on her mind. NOT for kids. The transfer is perfect.

Comments about Pretty Maids All In A Row:

I remember seeing this on cable TV in the days when you only had one movie channel, HBO. I love Rock Hudson, so any film with him is a must have for me. Very campy by todays' standards, but this is one of my guilty pleasures. I really enjoyed seeing it again after more than 25 years- Not a classic along the lines of lets say...Gone with the Wind, but still a classic of the 70's exploitation type films-
