When I saw Pretty Maids All in a Row in 1971 I remember it as just an OK murder mystery. The changes in society since then have turned it into much more. It's now a historic time capsule of the social/sexual mores of the late 60s/early 70s. Watching it now I laughed more than I have at any movie in years. Rock Hudson and Angie Dickinson both display the personal appeal that made them popular stars, and Roger Vadim shows his affection for teenage curves. If you like Russ Meyer's Beyond the Valley of the Dolls, you'll like Pretty Maids All in a Row.

Offbeat, softcore sex comedy/murder mystery from Star Trek's Gene Roddenberry. Hippy high school counselor Rock Hudson is the weak link in this "lost" film from 1971. Broad comedy is undercut with a dark, serial killer sub-plot. The best analogy I can think of is Three's Company meets Heathers. Sound good to you? Otherwise an interesting cast and the DVD looks really good...so throw away those pan-and-scan VHS dupes!

Highly entertaining movie due to the partial nudity and absurdity of the plot. My husband (especially my husband) thought the movie was a hoot.

Great little movie that hasn't been available for a long time. Not only does the film offer great performances, producer and screenwriter, Gene Roddenberry has fashioned a witty, very "politicaly incorrect", black comedy. French Cinema's notorious "Svengali", Roger Vadim, directs with style and visual flair. Several of the minor characters are actors who had played parts in Roddenberry's "Star Trek", including "Scotty" James Doolin and William Campbell. The video transfer is overall, the best I've ever seen on this title. Recommended!!!

Great little film penned by Gene Roddenberry of Star Trek fame. You will see Jimmy Doohan (Scotty)talk without his Scottish accent. Also on hand is the actor who played the Klingon Commander from Trouble With Tribbles and Trelene, William Campbell. Rock Hudson is smooth as silk as the student seducing maybe Killer. Telly Savalas, in a pre Kojak role is the Police Inspector. Lovely and sexy as heck, Angie Dickenson plays another teacher with lechery on her mind. NOT for kids. The transfer is perfect.

I remember seeing this on cable TV in the days when you only had one movie channel, HBO. I love Rock Hudson, so any film with him is a must have for me. Very campy by todays' standards, but this is one of my guilty pleasures. I really enjoyed seeing it again after more than 25 years- Not a classic along the lines of lets say...Gone with the Wind, but still a classic of the 70's exploitation type films-

Comments about Pretty Maids All In A Row* (Autographed Copies Sold Out, Standard Version Available):

Kind of a pleasant surprise. Having caught the trailer a few times at 70s-ear revival screenings, I'd been looking to see this film for a while. Beneath all of the light-hearted humor, there's a far more sardonic film than I'd anticipated, but that's not a bad thing. The whole murder-mystery element, despite its kind of obvious resolution, also worked pretty well.

The print quality is relatively solid. There is some intermittent damage in the form of lines, flecks, and one instance of some fairly bad scarring on the transfer. However, short of striking a new print, this is the best way to watch Pretty Maids anywhere. Recommended.

Comments about Pretty Maids All In A Row* (Autographed Copies Sold Out, Standard Version Available):

So now I've finally gotten to see the infamous PRETTY MAIDS ALL IN A ROW. My major thought while watching it: "This is just like a Corman drive-in movie in the 70s!"

This is jet-black comedy, and like the best of that breed, everything is taken to the extreme - in this case, the free love movement of the 60s, and the extreme taken is high school teachers sleeping with their students. That's the primary reason this movie wouldn't get made today; certainly not in its present form.

The other reason is director Roger Vadim's trademark fascination with the feminine form. The Pretty Maids in question - all supposedly under 18 - attend a high school where the dress code calls for mini-skirts, short shorts, and no bras.

I grew up in the 60-70s, so I was able to put the story in its context, but the group I saw it with - all at least ten years younger than myself - were shocked! Shocked at the goings-on!

Make no mistake, though, this is definitely no quickly shot drive-in exploitation flick. The movie's still Metro quality. Rock Hudson does an acidic take on his typical ladies-man persona, and is quite chilling at times. Angie Dickenson is called upon to play a cliched, clueless, lovelorn single woman, and still gives it her best shot. Telly Savalas is great as the police detective who can't prove what the audience knows five minutes into the movie. Keenan Wynn, Roddy MacDowell, James Doohan, William Campbell are all solid, as usual.

As a friend of mine pointed out, "offensive" is a moving target. I would recommend Pretty Maids to those who might be interested in how things can change so drastically in forty years, or those that, like me, enjoy leaving their jaded movie-watching friends gobsmacked with disbelief.
