" FOUR FOR ONE AND ONE FOR FOUR "
from Pasadena, CA
Disc1:The Bishop Murder case: M.G.M presentation with B. RathboneThe print comes with speckles, marks, a few bad frames and some major issue with the audio track( very windy) but decent contrast, relatively sharp 'image', and quite good black.Low print.Still we can enjoy' the plot'The Kennel Murder case: Warner Bros presentation with W. PowellThe print is (too dark at the beginning) quite damaged, really 'average image',black levels were 'fair' from time to time, sharp also, and but the audio track is quite good. It's uneven in spots, with some softness and scratches, and a few bad frames. It was a great disappointment.Disc 2:The Dragon Murder case: First National Pictures presentation with W. WilliamThe print comes with speckles, marks, a few bad frames and with a quite good audio track. Decent contrast, sharp 'image', and quite good black.Watchable print. The Casino Murder case: M.G.M presentation with P. LukasThe print is not so bad, still there are lots of white specks, a few bad frames, with some softness, and scratches. The audio track is clear and 'almost clean'.However quite good contrast, relatively sharp, and good black.Watchable print.Disc 3:The Garden Murder case: M.G.M presentation with E. LoweThe print look like in "poor shape": it's uneven in spots, with some softness and scratches and a few bad frames, but decent contrast, acceptable sharpness. The audio track is quite clean and clear.Average but watchable print.Calling Philo Vance: Warner Bros presentation with J. StephensonThe print is quite good with little damage, white spots, some softness and scratches , few bad frames. The audio track is quite good:clear and clean.Watchable print.RECOMMENDED

About Me Classic Detectives Buff, Collector, Movie Buff
What a delight to have fine quality versions of these films after years of poor quality bootlegs and all-nighters watching scratched and patched 16 mm versions at film festivals.

I love old movies, especially mysteries. I bought it for the Basil Rathbone movie but have really enjoyed the rest of them. Even though the movies were nnot remastered they were very watchable considering their age.
Warner programmers at their finest!

About Me Collector, Movie Buff
I really like these mystery programmers from the greatest studio of all time: Warner Bros. Of course, William Powell is my favorate Philo with Warren William a close second. What the hey. I've got all of these on home burnt DVDs, but I want the nice labels and cool packaging and NO TCM "bug" every 20 minutes or so. Call me a perfectionist. I am. Only wish the Warner Archives could get permission to release the 3 Powell Paramount Philo Vances...and the 1 William Philo. Are you listening Universal? Make another deal with Warner/TCM so we can enjoy these "B" movie gems as well. Kudos Warner Archives. I love your discs!
Great to see these in good video shape

About Me Collector
It is like seeing these for the first time - so clear and the best prints available. Most of these have been in public domain at one time or another - so to see them in pristine shape just adds to the fun. Not all are classics -but still good entertainment.

If you like old mysteries, you should like this one.One of my favorites is, " The Kennel Murder Case" with William Powell. The story in the "Casino Murder Case" is good, but I did not care for Paul Lukas as Philo Vance.Still 5 stars for the collection.
