One of my favorite animated features as a kid, THE PHANTOM TOLLBOOTH is a remarkable cinematic translation of the original book, and a testament to the genius of Chuck Jones.

This new DVD is a real treat for fans of TOLLBOOTH, as it is the first time we get to see the film in its original widescreen format since it was first in theaters.

The greatest kick for me was to share this timeless film with my kids, who are both around the same age I was when my folks took me to the theater to see it in the 70's. In this age of 3-D and CGI animation, I didn't know how they would respond to the scaled-down simplicity of this 40 year old movie. I shouldn't have been surprised how much they loved it. They've watched it about ten times since it arrived...and occasionally they let me watch with them!

Thank you Warner Archive people for this DVD...it's a true treasure!

This is a great cartoon that really did justice to the book. To me, it has held up since it was originally made and still applies to today's culture. A bored youth learns how to use his imagination.

Unfortunately, the quality of this DVD is not very good. While it does say remastered, I found that the picture quality was very grainy and well worn.

Plus, the first copy I received did not work...jumped and skipped and made the movie unwatchable. Warner easily and quickly sent me a replacement that did work, but I find that MOD movies are inherently flawed and take several tries to get a working copy. To bad this wonderful classic won't get the DVD it deserves.

Comments about Phantom Tollbooth, The (1969):

I saw this film when I was in elementary school in 1969! I was impressed with it then and many years later I saw it again as a young adult on tv ch.55 on weak uhf signal! The picture was wavy at times but I saw the whimsical characters and I knew they were produced by Chuck Jones, the man who brought both Bugs Bunny and How the Grinch Stole Christmas to life! I met him face to face and he told me it was a pleasure to talk to me because I asked very good questions! I have made my own hand drawn animations on both super 8 and vhs tape for many years so I followed his work closely! When he died soon after the beginning of the 21st century it was a very sad day in the animation world! Then years later I saw THE PHANTOM TOLLBOOTH advertised on Warner Archive with remastered picture! So I ordered it and got it the last week of April 2012 and I am just amazed at how well it holds up! The layouts of Maurice Noble and backround painting of Philip Guard immerse both the viewer and Milo the boy hero(Butch Patrick Eddie Munster of THE MUNSTERS)into a fantastic world of animated fantasy!! Milo is bored with his school routine and the Phantom Tollbooth appears and takes him on the road to adventure!! Chuck Jones's top animaters from his holiday specials and warner brother's days bring such characters as Mr.Humbug and a Spelling Bee to life with both wit and great performance! And Milo's journey had him encounter the King of Letters and the King of Numbers both voiced by Hans Conreid! June Foray and Mel Blanc among others voice the rest of the animated cast! The script and it's moral are very relevant today! This is american hand drawn animation at it's best!! If only MGM promoted it better so it could be a hit! It's hand drawn animation just amazes me in this age of CGI movie hype! Thank you Warner Archive for the remastering, it looks gorgeous!! I just wish I could hear Butch Patrick describe his experience of starring in a Chuck Jones animated feature. It's not everyday you see yourself as an animated cartoon version of yourself!! And the songs are great too! This was Chuck Jones's last big hurrah in animation! There is even a cartoon conducter who conducts a sunset like Leopold Stokowski in FANTASIA, an animated movie favorite of mine!! So buy THE PHANTOM TOLLBOOTH!! It works great on my DVD RAM/-R recorder since it is recorded on DVD-R MOD format. So all Warner Archive dvds are compatible with DVD-R recorders/players.

Butch Patrick from the Munsters is the main character. It is based on a book. What's so great about it is that it doesn't make you feel like your being talked down to. Kids will love it.
