Comments about Out Of The Past (BD):

Stunning. That sums it up nicely. Stunning transfer to Blu-ray. Just packed with detail, even the cigarrette smoke has detail. The image quality is exceptional. The mono sound is crisp and clear.

The film breathes 'noir' with great character and story development. The cast, director, cinematographer, composer -- all aspects of the production are exemplary.

"Out of the Past" is right up there alongside "The Maltese Falcon" as a noir classic. And that says a lot.

WB/WAC is to be commended for this beautifully done Blu-ray release. Most highly recommended!

    ---

Please Warner, more Blu-ray! The WAC DVDs are great but Blu-ray leaves them waaaaaay behind in image quality. I would love to have "PT-109", "Tarzan's Greatest Adventure", "The Harvey Girls", all the Randolph Scott westerns, and more on Blu-ray. Thank you!

Comments about Out Of The Past (BD):

The term "Film Noir" was coined after most of the films it describes were made, so the term has always been difficult to define. Some say it is a separate genre, but most believe it is simply a style within the Crime Film genre. What are the elements of a Film Noir? Dark themes? Moody black & white photography? Seedy urban settings? Lots of night scenes? Doomed characters? Femme fatales? Wise-cracking dialogue?

Well, one thing that everyone agrees upon: "Out of the Past" has all of those elements and more, making it one of the very best examples of Film Noir. Other noir elements include jazz, use of voice over and lots of cigarette smoking.

Some have complained that the story is hard to follow, but you should know that Film Noir tends to focus on character, rather than plot. If you pay closer attention to Greer's character, instead of Mitchum's character (who is a bit of a dim bulb), you should be able to follow the story. And forget about the macguffin of the incriminating papers.

The DVD of this film, released when Warner Home Video was flooding the market with noirs, has always looked and sounded fine, so this Blu-ray is only a slight improvement with an image that is a little cleaner and sharper. The audio is of 1947 quality, although the female voices all sound a bit muffled (very odd).

The only extra is an audio commentary by one of the Film Noir "experts". There are also English subtitles and the same chapter markers that were on the DVD (but no chapter menu).

If you want to test the waters of Film Noir, or if you've never owned "Out of the Past", this WAC release is highly recommended.
