Our Miss Brooks (MOD)

In the 1950s, America adopted Our Miss Brooks as its very own. Eve Arden starred as Connie Brooks in the long-running radio and TV series about a wisecracking high school English teacher. The movie provides all the TV show's charm and laughter.

Comments about Our Miss Brooks (MOD):

They had the same cast, the same writers and the same director as the TV series. Yet, this movie lacks everything that made the series so great. Apparently, writer-director Al Lewis wanted the movie to be a sort of "series finale", in which Connie Brooks and Philip Boynton finally became lovers. By focusing most of the movie on the Brooks-Boynton romance, the colorful supporting characters were left stranded on the sidelines, thus robbing the movie of the lively byplay that was the hallmark of the radio and TV series. What results is a silly, run-of-the-mill romantic comedy with just a few forced laughs. Then, to make sure he'd sucked every last drop of fun from the movie, Lewis introduced two serious sub-plots. Unbelievable!

The best I can say about this DVD is that the picture and sound are in very good condition.

Comments about Our Miss Brooks (MOD):

The TV show was a sitcom classic, making great use of Eve Arden's superb timing and comic wit. The film avoids that route almost completely, settling for a romantic comedy-drama that moves slowly and gets little use out of Arden or the rest of the TV cast. Result: few laughs, soggy story. I have ordered a copy of Arden's autobiography to find out what they were thinking when they made this odd movie.
