Our Dancing Daughters

Joan Crawford stripped to her teddy and tore into a Charleston powered by a zillion watts of sexual energy - and shocked the corsets and cravats off parents who'd heard disturbing rumblings of what their children were up to.

    Comments about Our Dancing Daughters:

The film that famously launched Joan Crawford to headliner. Is it really all that good?

Well, it's good enough. As I say elsewhere, none of the three Crawford/Page "Our" films are great, but all are pretty good -- and this one is arguably the best. Besides Joan's her famous dancing scene, she shows surprising vulnerability in the twists & turns of the subsequent melodrama. Before this, we'd seen her be sweet support in other people's films; later, she'd be strong in ways a woman has to be strong, and that's mostly how people remember her now.

OUR DANCING DAUGHTERS bridges these two Joans wonderfully, so that I don't even really remember the other actresses' performances. Which just means it's time to watch it again, of course, and so I bought all three "Our" DVDs here on Warner Archive. Definitely recommended.

    Comments about Our Dancing Daughters:

Joan Crawford (oh, those eyes !) in a movie made in the 1920's about the roaring twenties. Young, idle, and carefree, the "in crowd" discovers that living for today and being unconcerned about tomorrow can result in unforeseen and unwanted consequences. Wow ! That still holds true today.
Entertaining film that succeeds in drawing you in as the story progresses.
Particularly interesting for film buffs to see Crawford in the early stages of
her career, far, far different from her later screen persona. Listen for the inclusion of some dialogue in the sound track as the movies began their transition from silent to sound films.

      Comments about Our Dancing Daughters:

Made in the twenties about the idle, swinging, rich in the twenties.
Spoiled brats in love with the good times. Living life for today, with
little thought of the consequences. But wait ! They can't understand
when their wild, flirtatious reputations become major hurdles in
forming meaningful, serious relationships. Heartbreak ahead !!!!!!!!!!
You can't have it both ways folks. Still rings true almost ninety years
      later.
A very young Joan Crawford (oh, those big eyes !) is the leader of the
roaring twenties "in crowd" in this entertaining, rollicking movie.
Music track includes some sound effects including a spoken line (or two?) as the film industry was transitioning into all talkies. Not touched up or remastered, so you will have to deal with your standard specks and flakes in the viewing image. As you get drawn into the story you will begin to forget/overlook the visual imperfections of the film.

        Comments about Our Dancing Daughters:

At last this delightful picture is available in its original form! "Our Dancing Daughters" was NOT a silent; it was released by M-G-M in 1928, just before the studio decided to go full-throttle into talking pictures. This picture, like many others, was released as a part-talkie, meaning that it was accompanied by a true soundtrack (Fox Movietone sound-on-film--not Vitaphone disc). The sound track provides appropriate sound effects and a musical score designed to fit the action. Although the source material shows some nitrate decomposition, many patches, and a may scratches, this presentation of the picture far exceeds the merits of the many bootleg prints (with inappropriate music and no other effects) that have been circulating. This is "Our Dancing Daughters" as Crawford herself would want us to see. She's sensational.

            Comments about Our Dancing Daughters:

This is truly a great movie from the standpoint of documenting a long-lost part of our culture. Yes, everyone in this movie is wealthy, but given that, it still gives one a sense of what "flaming youth" was about.
The acting and editing are so good that one can almost forget that this is a silent movie, save for the recorded music, sound effects, and one brief instance of a voice. The youthful Joan Crawford is astounding! Although her friend (later to be less than a friend) Anita Page is cuter and even prettier, Crawford's presence on the screen is riveting and exceptionally seductive. Right from the start she had true star quality. The film may be dated, but it's still extremely engaging.
I didn't find the condition of the print that was used too distracting from the film itself. Despite some splices and other defects in the image, at least the image generally was sharp. What I found to be extremely objectionable was the fiber that was caught in the film chain and danced about in the upper left-hand corner of the picture throughout almost the entire first reel. The same thing happens later in the picture, although by then I had lost count of what reel we were in. Such extra-film anomalies have no place in a released print or DVD.
The sound track, Vitaphone disc-based, is generally good, but it could have been cleaned up a lot better. There are still many clicks and pops, as well as disc rumble and other distractions.
I hope that someone eventually does a remastering of this film. It is definitely worth saving.
Incidentally, there's a treasure-trove here of many of the popular songs of that era. In many cases, what you hear is appropriate to what is happening on-screen. Documentation of this music would be helpful for those who aren't schooled in the popular culture of this era.

            Comments about Our Dancing Daughters:

A landmark movie that sums up youth culture during the 1920s and launches Joan Crawford to stardom. The makings of her later screen persona - including "Joan the warrior" is all here. The print could use some restoration, though, as it's filled with scratches, a few hisses on the sound track, and some shakiness (although the worn-out print probably testifies to its popularity as well). Great movie!

I have been waiting for this DVD for a long time. I am a huge Joan Crawford fan and I find it terribly sad that so many of her film have not been released to DVD. Glad to see so many Crawford DVD releases in 2010! Now what about Our Blushing Brides, The Bride Wore Red, Winners of the Wilderness, Untamed, Montana moon, I live My Life... LETTY LYNTON!!!
