Loved THE WOMDEN. Didn't love this remake. Some of it was fine but the music got in the way. Had the music been better it might have worked. The comedy number with Shawn and Backus and the "girls" was dumb. Joan Blondell steals every scene she is in. Ann Miller is wasted. The whole thing is rather boring. But thank you WB for making all of these movies available to us.

Incredible cast, but why would June Allyson get a huge production number, and not one tune for Ann Miller? Much as I love June, it should have been Ann or Dolores Gray with the big number. The story has been told before and since, but never gets old. Some great MGM backlot scenes.

Comments about Opposite Sex, The (MGM):

I love this film! It's a stylized glimps into New York in the 1950's, complete with the music, fashions, and social mores of the time - even a nod to the advent of television. It's such a treat to see young stars, in the bud of their careers, such as Joan Collins, Carolyn Jones, Dean Jones, and Leslie Neilsen (looking spectacular!). June Allyson was the unfortunate victim of bad casting (I've read where Esther Williams turned down the part - and she would have been much better), but Delores Gray, Joan Blondell, Ann Miller, Ann Sheridan, Agnes Moorhead, and Charlotte Greenwood are all wonderful in their roles. You also get to see Alice Pearce (Gladys Kravits, from "Bewitched") in a delightful supporting role (one of the few that I've seen, other than her even more substantial role in "On the Town"), and the handsome Jeff Richards in one of his rare featured roles. There's even a comedy number with Jim Backus and Dick Shawn. MGM had "more stars than there are in the heavens", and it seems that half of them made their own unique contribution to this film. I also love the production numbers - complete with huge casts of well-costumed backup singers and dancers. The print looks beautiful on my big TV, and the stereo soundtrack is a real treat. This is a movie that was made when movies were MOVIES, and I never tire of seeing it.

This is a wonderful musical remake of The Women (1939). I've been hoping for this film to come to DVD for a long time and I'm glad Warner Bros. has finally made it available. With this film I now own all three versions of this film (the 1939 original, the 1956 musical, and the 2008 version).

Musical remake of the 1939 film "THE WOMEN."
Not as good as the orginal film. The songs are ok, but not memorable. Adding Men to the film , just slows it down. Picture is in color and great costumes !!

Comments about Opposite Sex, The (MGM):

Great movie, saw the trailer on my The WOMEN (1939) dvd which caught my attention. I found the remastered edition (well done) on the WB shop which I wanted to see. The movie is true Hollywood glam which sadly doesn't exist any more. A great cast that delivers. Lots of venomous dialog like the original with music an men mixed in. If you enjoy the original with an added mix of 50s movie chic I recommend seeing this movie.

Comments about Opposite Sex, The (MGM):

I was around for the original release in 1956 and already a musical fan, but the generally tepid reviews kept me away from it. My loss! While it lacks the edginess of the original Cukor version of "The Women" or the interesting updates of the underrated remake with Anette Benning, this lavishly produced musical is what it intends to be: entertaining. I could wish that Ann Miller and Dolores Gay had been given a chance to do what they do best--sing and dance, but they turn in fine high comedy performances in their assigned roles. Even if it were not as good as it is, this film would be worth viewing just to see some of the finest actresses of the fifties strut their stuff. If a very young Joan Collins is not quite up to the bitchery of Joan Crawford, at least we know her Alexis is in the chute. Ann Sheridan, in what must have been one of her final roles, is particularly fine. My only complaint is that I'd have liked Charlotte Greenwood to have more screen time. In sum, a fine example of the kind of classy entertainment which no one did better than MGM in the fifties. Let down your hair and enjoy. (The remastered cinemascope is a nice bonus.)

The first DVD didn't work at all. [...] I'm not familiar with the remastering process, but the movie had a lot of white scratches flashing throughout which suprised me considering it is a newer movie and not an older black/white? The movie itself I love!
