            Comments about Operation Daybreak (1975):

The history is essentially accurate as far as I know, and the setting in Prague is convincing, but I think the ending was a bit overdramatized. The main characters were extremely brave to do what they did. This is a fitting tribute to them.

Good historical account with minor departures from the historical record but these are largely peripheral and unaffecting the actual story.

                Comments about Operation Daybreak (1975):

'Operation Daybreak' is a taut, unforgettable, nail-biter account of the true story of the daring mission of Czech patriots Sergeants Josef Gabcik and Jan Kubis to kill the brutal, mass-murdering chief of their country's Nazi occupiers, Reinhard Heydrich. The DVD's video and audio are very good, but the DVD lacks subtitles for critical dialogue spoken in German by the film's German characters, which is odd since in theatrical release, and in prints later telecast on various TV stations, prints of this film included subtitles of the German dialogue - since this is the only DVD release of 'Operation Daybreak' I recommed it, with reservation for its lack of subtitles; the lack of subtitles reduces my star rating of the DVD from 5 to 4 (the film itself rates well-deserved 5 stars). For dramatic effect the script includes an event which didn't actually happen, but this doesn't detract from the film's accurate portrayal of the sheer bravery of Gabcik and Kubis, and of the members of the Czech underground, in carrying out their operational orders. No one I know who has seen this film has ever forgotten it - in the heart of each viewer 'Operation Daybreak' makes a profound, enduring impression.

I never saw this film until now on the Warner Archive edition and I have to say its a very good film. Filmed on location where it actually happened, it has an Inside the Third Reich feel to it. I recommend it.
