Thank you! Thank you, Warner Archive! This is what the Warner Archive program is all about. "Northwest Passage" is a bona fide classic, one that was hard to find for years. It's release on dvd was long overdue and now it's time has arrived.

I first watched this when I was younger and I was enthralled by the rather unusual subject matter (you do not see many movies about this period of time), the engaging script and the phenomenal color cinematography. To watch it today, I am still amazed at how crisp and vivid the redcoats' uniforms and Rogers' Rangers green tunics look on the screen.

This is a true classic action-adventure movie, great for watching on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon. Thank you, Warner Archive, for making this available for our home theater libraries.

The movie itself is great and always has been, but this DVD is pretty bad.
My approximately 15-year-old videotape version from MGM/UA and Turner looks significantly better.
In the tape, which I just looked at for comparison, people's faces look natural. In the DVD the faces (all Caucasians) are deep or bright pink. It's very disconcerting.
Also, I assumed that images in the DVD would be sharper than in the tape. They are not.

      Comments about Northwest Passage:

I first saw this movie in the theater in the late 1950s when it was reissued. I loved it then and I love it now! In beautiful Technicolor, this 1940 MGM studio epic is a sight to behold, with an outstanding cast, fantastic cinematograpy, a great story based on real American history, and is a fine addition to anyone's home vidoo library.

This is a classic film that came out just after "Gone with the Wind" and maybe it doesn't get the same recognition, but to me it is on the same level as a memorable classic of great Hollywood films!

                      Comments about Northwest Passage:

This long-awaited release of MGM's classic "Northwest Passage" (1940) onto DVD is a welcome addition to anyone's historical-adventure or military-movie library.

The film is based on the first half of author Kenneth Roberts' best-selling historical novel, which chronicles the grueling, real-life 1759 French and Indian War raid by Rogers' Rangers on the Abenaki Indian village of St. Francis. Spencer Tracy is in fine form as Major Robert Rogers, leader of the mostly American-born Rangers attached to the British Army, with Robert Young and Walter Brennan along as impressed members of his force.

Although erroneously decried as "politically incorrect" in its attitude towards Native Americans by some modern-day critics, this beautifully-photographed film, in "more-real-than-real-life" Technicolor, was quite daring in its day for its presentation of the realities of frontier warfare in North America between the English and French and their respective Indian allies.

"Northwest Passage" perfectly illustrates the strength, ruggedness, and determination of the early colonial Americans, here represented by Rogers' Rangers in this film about their epic journey to, battle at, and desperate return march from St. Francis. It is a "must-buy" DVD for classic-film lovers and American history enthusiasts alike.
