James Garner's classic TV show "The Rockford Files" is probably his best remembered series (along with "Maverick")but it's this show that always had a special place in my heart.

Garner plays the title character of the series who finds himself blackmailed into becoming the sheriff of a town named after his family.

The series features Stuart Margolin appearing for the first time on screen with Garner as well as the debut of Margot Kidder and well known supporting actor John Beck as Nichols frequent idiotic rival.

On the whole, this is a good set. The transfer is pretty basic; there hasn't been any attempt to restore the series but this is a relatively clean transfer.

The color timing varies a bit and could have used a little bit of TLC to make the episodes consistent from shot to shot. The contrast also is a bit wonky at times with day-for-night scenes too light. The contrast, likewise, varies quite a bit from shot-to-shot in a single episode. Normally this would be fixed in post-production or during the transfer itself.

Overall, I'm pleased with having the series but I do wish that the a bit more care had been exercised during the transfer.

It would have also been nice given the price to get a couple of extras--there are some online interviews with Garner discussing the series that could have been licensed.

"Nichols" is a terrific series that deserved DVD release long before now. I'm happy that Warner has seen fit to release this set.

The show has long been called a lost classic... but it's not. It's a show in search of itself. It can't decide what it wants to be...a Maverick re-do, a western spoof, or a straight-ahead western. It ends up failing on all counts. The only thing memorable about the show was the finale episode, a desperate and novel attempt to reboot the series in the face of cancellation.

Very clever show that it's sponsors never understood. Money was pulled for this reason which never allowed it to develop. Few shows excel their first year but this one had great promise.

Comments about Nichols: The Complete Series:

I loved this show when I was kid. Never missed it. It's great fun. A must for James Garner fans. Veteran actress Neva Patterson nearly steals the show every time she shows up and Stuart Margolin was wonderful in his first pairing with Garner.

Comments about Nichols: The Complete Series:

Nichols is one show that I never knew existed. Big James Garner fan and did not know about it. This comedy/western series is a blast. So many character actors in the series. Margot Kidder very good. This is on DVD-Rs but look really great for its age. Not sure many caught this delightful series on TV when it was on in 1971-1972. This set includes all 24 episodes on six DVDs (so no compression problems!). The discs are housed in one slim DVD case without stacking the discs. Great for shelves. A real treat from one of the leading men from Hollywood. Highly recommended.

Comments about Nichols: The Complete Series:

This was apparently a DVD that was produced on demand. The quality is wonderful. The dvd froze about 3/4 of the way through the first episode but I think it is my DVD player. Great stuff - Jmes Garner at his very best.

Comments about Nichols: The Complete Series:

NICHOLS has been talked about for years as James Garner's favorite series, but has not been seen since its first broadcast. While not as sharply funny and witty as his previous series, MAVERICK, or the forthcoming THE ROCKFORD FILES, it is still an enjoyable show and a slice of "lost" Garner. Film-to-Video transfer is good.
