    NO PROBLEM PRINT

    Comments about Moonfleet:

A failed Fritz Lang film that went barely noticed on release. Whilst the film is a little jumbled, it remains entertaining in part with beautiful CINEMASCOPE photography. What is wrong with all the people complaining about the aspect ratio? Problem must be with their TV settings. Dont let them deter you from buying a film which warrants attention. Check the serious reviews on the film on the website and you will find how mixed they are. So this is in short a film of mixed pleasures - one being the print used here!!!

          Comments about Moonfleet:

Warner Archive took a fairly entertaining colorful film and produced a defective DVD-R edition by using a 1:1.33 aspect ratio Television copy of the film to transfer onto the Widescreen 1:1.77 format. Guess what it looks like? People are fatter, trees are wider, buildings are lower and longer, etc. The viewer gets their first warning of this problem during the opening titles when you can see that the sides are cut off and the complete credits are not readable. I suppose if you really like this film you can ignore these problems, but if you are looking for a quality produced disc, find another title.

            Comments about Moonfleet:

Product was "OK", however, the film source print is in need of restoration. Not that good contrast, and black level but still watchable print.
            This is the widescreen presentation.
I think this is the first and only time Director Fritz Lang use "Scope"!
            Enjoy!

                Comments about Moonfleet:

I bought this because it was directed by Fritz Lang, and was surprised to find it a well-made Young Boy'sAdventure story, a la Treasure Island. Great MiklosRozsa music, a lovely performance by the enchantingJoan Greenwood, and a less-wooden-than usual jobby Stewart Granger. Unfortunately, the sides werecropped (the first clue was the pre-title credit:in INEMASCOP). And then, because Lang had used every inch of the screen, we started having peopletalking to characters who had been sliced off thesides. I'm on my second copy now, still with thesame problem, [...]

                  Comments about Moonfleet:

This film is closed captioned, I have seen it on TCM captioned and it also has a region 2 French release with extras and subtitles in English. Why weren't these extras and at the very least the subs brought over to this release? The trailer isn't even on the disc!
I am very disappointed in this release and will probably not buy another Archive dvd until Warner Bros. starts putting subs on all of their releases for those who are hard of hearing.

                  Comments about Moonfleet:

This is the kind of film that MOD was created for. Not a popular or well known film, Moonfleet has several touches that make it recognizable as the work of director Fritz Lang. This was one of his later "for hire" movies. As such, the plotting is a bit perfunctory and some of the casting slightly off kilter. However, the performances of Stewart Granger and the young juvenile lead are quite good. There is even an early performance by Western character actor Jack Elam as one of the smugglers. The widescreen color photography is also pleasing.

This is full frame. I received it the day before TCM showed a beautiful CinemaScope rendition, and I find it difficult to believe that the Archives did not have access to that print. This is an important film and it is horrifying to realize it will never see the light of day on HomeVideo in America (and I wish that I had kept the ld.
