McConnell Story, The

In war, McConnell became America’s first triple jet ace, downing 16 enemy planes. In peace, he braved the unknown as a test pilot in the jet era’s infancy. The McConnell Story’s darting and swerving aerial sequences will thrill you.

I have loved this movie since I saw it on TMC at least 15 years ago. Found a very rare second hand VHS copy on [@] and wore it out. This movie encompasses adventure, danger and enduring love. I would recommend this movie to anyone who loves old war movies. Love it. Love it. Love it.

good F-86 footage. nice crisp copy. the Warnercolor copy is bright and clear.

plot is a bit 50s red scare, but acting and flight footage more than make up for it.

            Comments about McConnell Story, The:

Here's one of those typical Hollywood biopics from the 50's, full of that era's notions of the American dream. It's another showcase for Allyson being the ideal concept for domestic bliss: namely a feisty gal that supports her husband staying at home having kids while he's desperately seeking success. This time she goes by the name "Butch", stands behind triple-jet-ace Ladd to the bitter end, and manages to handle it with her usual aplomb. Ladd plays the lead with light precision, while Whitmore does his usual hamfisted character bit. Bottomline: corny and cutesy military love story, with a creepy, cold-war introduction by some right-wing General, so Warners would get the endorsement and cooperation of the Air Force.
The print used has aged fairly well, and it's presented in anamorphic CinemaScope, with it's stereophonic soundtrack intact (matrixed 2-track for Dolby Pro-Logic).
