Little Nellie Kelly

Garland plays dual roles: Irish immigrant Nellie and her daughter, Little Nellie. Both contend with the same cantankerous coot, the laze-about father who fusses mightily when Nellie marries and then years later when Little Nellie falls in love.

    Comments about Little Nellie Kelly:

Little Nellie Kelly really contains little else than a lot of a young Judy Garland with stome strong support by a handful of MGM stock character players. The plot isn't particularly indepth, but it doesn't need to be. The plot is really built around Judy Garland and her growing ability to command an audience at tender mements.

      Comments about Little Nellie Kelly:

Finally! This long awaited family favorite has finally made it to DVD. It is one of those touching films that leave you walking away feeling good and singing the songs. I don't feel that Judy ever got the recognition she actually deserved for her dual roles, but that's not for me to say. You be the Judge. Enjoy as i know you will.

Pleasent enough, light froth of a story to carry a group of excellant, well presented songs. As usual they just have to give Judy the stage and stand back and enjoy.

        Comments about Little Nellie Kelly:

You'll get no spoilers from me -- you deserve to watch this start to finish, discovering its delights as you go. Be assured that audiences enjoyed seeing 18-year-old Judy Garland maturing overnight, radiant dramatic moments, dancing and singing with the wonderful George Murphy; excellent cast all the way, with light-hearted and heart-rending songs by Garland. At least one new song was written for the picture by Roger Edens, "Great Day for the Irish" (now standard Irish-American trandition), and Judy's debut performance of folk song "Pretty Girl Milking her Cow" in both original Gaelic lyrics and then-contemporary 1940 swing. This is an incredibly sweet and sentimental, yet lively version of Cohan's work (staged 18 years earlier, coincidentally, the same year Garland was born, 1922). Enjoy!
