Lili is a charming film of the early fifties produced by the MGM studio. The film may pretends to be a children film due to the puppet characters, yet it is adult love story with themes such as vanity, self hatred and unfulfilled dream and love. However this film is suitable for children and adults, and for all memebers of the family as it is in fact a story about love and growing up. The film is entertaining, and the puppets are very lovable. As indicated by one of the other reviewer, though this dvd-R is an improvement over ther prior issue of the laser disc version, a Technicolor restoration of it would be more enjoyable. This Dvd includes an original trailer of the film that truly shows the glorious Technicolorof its original release. Thanks to WB archive for bringing this film back on DVD.

Generally regarded as a minor masterpiece, this movie has gotten no respect from its owners over the years. When it was first released in 1953, MGM had no idea how to market it. Later, MGM/UA waited almost to the end of the laserdisc era before they released it in a fuzzy, washed-out version. WHV should have done a Technicolor restoration and released the film years ago on a pressed DVD. Instead, we get it almost as an afterthought from WAC on a DVD-R that looks like it was mastered from the same print as the laserdisc.

Like another reviewer, I saw this movie as a kid and was dazzled by the vivid Technicolor hues and charmed by the tender story. The story still charms, but the candy colors are badly muted and the audio is somewhat muffled, resulting in a less than satisfying experience.

Still, I'm recommending this release because of the fine performances and the excellent music. Until WAC or WHV decides to give Lili a proper restoration and release it on Blu-ray, I guess this is the most respect that Lili is going to receive.

I've looked for this film for years! All I had was an OLD VHS tape, WAY past it's prime/ I was 11 when this film came out, and its story and characters have stayed in my mind since then. Your company is the ONLY place I ever found it, and the quality is FIRST RATE! Thank you for making it available!

I found this jewel while pursuing info on Amanda Blake, saw the cast list and had to have it. It's a valued part of my collection. Nothing bad to say about it or the delivery process.

            Comments about Lili:

This charming story starring the lovely Leslie Caron and wonderful Mel Ferrer about a young girl who shows up in a strange city expecting to be empployed in a shop by a friend of her deceased father, who learns on arrival that the shop-owner is dead and the store closed, follows a puppeteer and magician to the carnival where they work and is instantly enchanted by the puppets, whom the puppeteer uses to express his own emotions, is heart-felt and touching without being cloying. It served as the basis for the wonderful Broadway musical "Carnival", which starred Ana Maria Albrighetti, Jerry Orbach and Keith Mitchell, plus an hysterical turn by Kaye Ballard as the magician's assistant/mistress.

                Comments about Lili:

A little masterpiece, "Lili" has not been given any respect by Warner Archive - suddenly creeping into release with a stack of dud movies. The film really warrants a proper restoration and release - obviously WB do not believe it is commercially viable. The film received 6 Oscar nominations including the important Best Director and Best Actress categories. Leslie Caron made this after her debut Oscar winning An American in Paris and achieved "A" status thereafter. NY Times' noted critic Bosley Crowther sums it up: "Lili" (is)a lovely and beguiling little film. Need more convincing to buy this gem?

                  Comments about Lili:

LILI arrives on DVD at last, and looks better than I've ever seen it. Leslie Caron's magical performance glows anew in this fine presentation which is a huge improvement over what we're used to seeing on TV (or what I have on an old laserdisc). Colors are crisper, the image is cleaner and sharper, and Ms. Caron no longer is blurred by blue blobs before the end ballet sequence as was the case before.

A tender, delightful film, LILI is unique in that it is often perceived at a children's film because of the relationship between Caron's character and the puppets with whom she interacts, but it is a far more adult story than it would seem on the surface for those who aren't familiar with it.

The direction by Charles Walters is impeccable, the screenplay by Helen Deutsch both charming and moving, and the entire cast is extremely good, but the kudos really belong to Mel Ferrer and Leslie Caron who will leave a lasting impression in every viewer's mind and heart.

Hopefully, the arrival of this beautiful new DVD will lead to new generations having the opportunity to fall in love with LILI, as so many have before.
