The transfer ( widescreen all right) looks 'ok' maybe better than I expected however it's uneven in spots, with some softness and scratches... Still in need of restoration.

            Comments about Last Run, The:

THE LAST RUN is a rarely seen film that has finally been released on DVD by Warner Brothers. Directed by Richard Fleisher (THE NARROW MARGIN and ARMORED CAR ROBBERY), a veteran of 1950s Hollywood noir cinema, this troubled production was savaged by the critics when it came out in 1971. As is often the case, the critics were dead wrong. George C. Scott turns in a low key performance as Harry Garmes, a world weary mob driver who has retired from the criminal life to live on his savings in a small, Portuguese fishing village. To prove to himself that he can still do the job, this aging Bogartian anti-hero takes on one last job to drive an escaped safe cracker from out of the clutches of the Spanish police for a job in southern France.

Tony Musante, best known for his starring role in the television series TOMA, is the ruthless escaped convict with an obsession for Hollywood gangster films and the exploits of mobsters. Garmes is none too happy when his obnoxious passenger drags along an American girl friend as a sexual toy who was passed on to him by his brother. Garmes has his own sense of independent tough guy ethics that are incomprehensible to his young passenger. Garmes will not abandon a client, even one he does not like. He will not be insulted or degraded by that client either. He cares for his car, his women, and the memories of his dead wife and child. This is a great film if you want to see a real tough guy, as opposed to the pretty boys of today's cinema, who maintains dignity and honor in a changing world where those things are becoming obsolete values.

I rate this film very highly as a prime example of the kind of edgy crime drama that studios turned out on a regular basis through the 1960s and early 1970s and disappeared during the late 1970s with the advent of the Steven Speilberg and George Lucas school of comic book film making.

The location photography alone will make this movie a sheer pleasure to watch. If you are unable to afford a trip to Europe right now, buy a bottle of wine and some goat cheese and watch this film as an acceptable substitute.

Excellent film! It's a shame we had to wait 40 years! 40 years... to my knowledge this film has never shown outside the theatre since 1971! George C. Scott is the best ever "Won an Oscar, but refused it, Actor" that ever lived. Maybe, Brando... the jury is still out.

Great story... spot on acting... everyone comes home a winner with this film!

                  Comments about Last Run, The:

spoilers...the love triangle does not come off well. Scott seems to smart & complex of a guy to fall for this vapid younger woman. Pros- great music, some great scenery. The film has some atmospheric moments with a flutter of existentialism but not anywhere near as well done as something akin to Vanishing point, Cockfighter, Two Lane Blacktop. Scott's motivations don't seem to be true to the character presented at the head of the film. Worth a look see.

George C. Scott's first performance since "Patton' must have been done as a labor of love. Difficult to see how 1971 audiences might have wanted to watch such a downbeat though excellent movie, Great about it are Scott; Tony Musante; Trish Van Devere; the script and plot; and some other supporting actors. Not so great was the non-performance of Musante's girlfriend. It's a Hemingway-esque adventure -- an old warhorse takes his last job -- that drags a little in the middle, then really picks up. Remember in film noir, not all the good guys win. The musical score, especially that over the opening credits, was wonderful.
