I had originally seen this as a "Made for TV movie" back in 1977. I was impressed by the stories concept and Richard Boone's screen presence as Madsen Thrust Jr., a self made man, billionaire, oil tycoon and big game hunter. Boone was the ideal person for that part at that time with his gruff voice, hard/weathered looks and forceful acting style. In contrast there is the lovely Joan Van Ark as Francesca 'Frankie' Banks the groups photogarpher who is witty, savvy and every bit the modern independent woman. She gradually takes a liking to Madsen because he represents a real man and underneath his roughness he does have some feelings. This would be relationship takes a path to nowhere by the end when she realizes that they are "literally" worlds apart. I was elated to find this gem listed on the Warner Archives site. After viewing it now 34 years later it is still a touching story of a person who comes to realize that their time has come and gone. The story is interesting, a man who is self made and lives by rules that are no longer acceptable in a changing society. The T Rex isn't the last dinosaur so is Masten Thurst. Since this is a Japanese made film commissioned by Rankin-Bass, the special effects are the standard man-in-suit variety. The effects are adequate at times and humorous occasionally. The film has drama, action, humor and a melodic but strange theme song, "The Last Dinosaur" sung by Nancy Wilson. Bottom line, you'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll kiss 95 minutes goodbye! I highly recommend it.

Great to see this finally on video. This used to be a somewhat regular Friday Night Movie on tv in the 70's. A good "kaiju" sci fi movie - but with an American cast and a time-travel premise. Yes it may only appeal to those who remember it or maybe to those who want to have their own "Mystery Science Theater 3000" fest, but it's great to finally catch this dinosaur.

      Comments about Last Dinosaur, The:

Other reviewers here have pretty much crystallized what makes this snapshot of the wonderfully wacked-out 1970's such an awesome viewing experience. Richard Boone chews more scenery than the T-Rex. The lovely Joan Van Ark is tough-yet-vulnerable and still so easy on the eyes! Plus there's hot-headed young buck Steven Keating, hairy honey "Hazel" the neaderthal maid... and Bunta!!!

We've all seen this plot re-hashed in older films, but there's something about this movie that just grabs you in spite of it's limitations (or maybe because of them). My best friend's kids initially laughed at the rough, pre-CGI effects, but the story's fantasy elements sucked 'em right in, and they were clapping and cheering by the time Boone launched his heroic yet doomed-to-fail catapult attack. Sadly, they just don't make 'em like this anymore.

I was lucky enough to watch the original broadcast of this as a 1977 ABC Friday Night Movie of The Week. Great memories! I've had a crummy, faded EP-speed VHS tape of this film that I'd clung to for years that can now be (thankfully) pitched. Bless you, Warner Archives for giving us this wonderfully cheesy gift! Now snap to it and order a copy of this astounding must-see movie for yourself, you DING DONG!!!

This movie was way better than I thought it would be. The main dinosaur looked pretty decent for the period that this movie was made. The story itself was the typical rich guy doing something only he could afford to do. If there was anything bad about this movie it would be Richard Boone himself. All the women were all falling for him be he really was kind of let's just say rough looking and not in a good way.

          Comments about Last Dinosaur, The:

This movie is pure gold--all due to the extreme inebriation of Richard Boone. He is obviously three sheets to the wind during the filming of this and to watch his drunken antics is the most entertaining thing about this film. I loved it as a kid for its dinosaurs but as an adult I love it for the bizarre, compulsively watchable performance of Richard Boone. He is awesome!

I remember seeing this film when it first showed on
ABC's Friday Movie of week back in 1977 A strange but
cool production from Rank (Mad Monster party) Baskin
Stars Richard Boone as The last big game hunter and
              adventurer who with a Journalist,scientist,engineer
and a tracker make a journey under the polar ice cap
to find not only a hidden prehistoric world complete
with dinosaurs but also the king of prehistoric beast
a towering Tyranasaurus Rex and so begins a cat &
mouse game between Hunter and Hunter. while this
TV movie rehashed some plots from such older films
like The Lost world (60) Land Unknown and others,it
still manages to stand on it's own goofy charm and
after chasing down copy after bad copy of it from inferior companies I'm glad that WBA decided to do a release of it.

I remember watching this as a kid and jumped at the opportunity buying the DVD to relive that excitement. When I was younger it was a terrifying tale of a man hunting the most dangerous predator on the planet. Now it's a hilarious film of substandard suitamation, and some over the top acting. In any case, this film is still entertaining.

                      Comments about Last Dinosaur, The:

Seeing this some 37 years after its TV Movie of the Week debut, in many ways this throwback, anachronistic upon its original 1977 release, is more fun to watch now than it was then. Above and beyond the baggy suited prehistoric monsters and their lush miniature environs is the performance of Richard Boone, barely sober enough to deliver his lines but giving his role as the richest man in the world histrionics that carry the entire film. The movie starts with him callously saying goodbye to an adoring Charlie's Angel lookalike, then falling in love with a feminist journalist who joins him in a journey to "the lost world". Nancy Wilson's sings the remarkable MOR title song, which refers as much to Boone's determined game hunter as to the floppy headed, drooling tyrannosaur.
A formulaic and farfetched blend of Aaron Spelling-type TV antics and Tsuburaya studios eye-candy special effects, it possesses more heart and charm than any 100 million dollar CGI epic of today.
