Lady of the Night (MOD)

David Page is loved by two very different women: Molly, an overpainted and undereducated floozy. And Florence, a refined graduate of a finishing school. Both lovelorn ladies played by Norma Shearer. You're in for double the romantic heartache.

Comments about Lady of the Night (1925):

This was my first time seeing Norma Shearer in a silent film, and I really enjoyed it. I am very familiar with her talkies from the '30s, and am a huge fan of hers and the liberated female characters she plays in films like The Divorcee and A Free Soul. In the character of Molly in Lady of the Night, I could see the seed of the later characters that she will become known for in the films I mentioned above. She came across as a strong female character to me even though her life had been pretty tragic. The other female character that she plays, Florence, isn't as memorable. The story more so focuses on Molly, which is good, since she is the more interesting character.

One discrepancy that I would like to mention is that the running time for the film was only 63 minutes and not 84 minutes like it says here on the Website. The fact that the film was much shorter didn't really bother me, but I do think that people should know that it is a shorter film than is mentioned here, especially if they don't want to pay for a film that is only an hour long. I think the film is still worth purchasing even though it is pretty short, since Shearer's performance is wonderful, and it is an enjoyable film. I recommend it to Shearer fans, and to people who enjoy films from this era, especially those with engaging and strong female characters. Even if you aren't normally a fan of silent films, I think it is still worth checking out, especially if you like Shearer.

I also hope that Warner Archive will release more of Shearer's silents. I plan on purchasing the other silent film that you have available, A Lady of Chance, and would buy any others you would release. I also would love if you could release the Shearer talkies Strangers May Kiss and Smilin' Through. I have never seen these films since they are very hard to find, and would very much like to have them in my collection.

Comments about Lady of the Night (1925):

I never thought I would buy a silent movie or like one,but I bought this because of reviews I saw online, and because Norma Shearer is in my view the greatest actress I've seen.
        Its a touching tale,especially Molly.
Norma plays both leads,if you are ever to buy a silent movie try this one, won't be disappointed

Shearer plays two parts, one a bad girl and another a good girl. Nicely detailed performance by Shearer, excellent cinematography and design.
