King's Thief, The

Lavish in its staging, full of passion and swordplay, and based on a true story, The King's Thief is a romantic, swashbuckling drama of royal intrigue inside the court of Charles II.

Comments about King's Thief, The:

It's great to see Niven and Sanders playing against their usual sophisticated types. Niven is a wonderfully sleazy villain, but Sanders gets too little screen time as the "Merry Monarch". In fact, with a running time of only 1:18, it appears this film was heavily edited. Purdom had a brief career with MGM, but he seems better suited for this type of costume escapism than he was in "Athena" or "The Student Prince". The scene where he and Roger Moore escape from a dungeon is beautifully staged and performed. Although Ann Blyth receives top billing, she is overshadowed by the male performers.

The remastering of this title has produced a mostly clean CinemaScope print with accurate colors, but a very soft image (seemingly several generations removed from the original negative). Oddly, the included trailer has a much sharper image than the feature. The stereo audio is excellent, reproducing both the dialogue and Miklos Rozsa's stirring score with fidelity.

Comments about King's Thief, The:

Versatile David Niven,... a villan? Say it isn't so Phileas Fogg! But it is, and he handles a rapier,(or is it, a foil?) with exquiste panache. The other actor to watch in all this sumptous sword play is George Sanders, who reprises his role as Charles II, (a role he made is own in the Legion of Decency banned "Forever Amber").

This may be the only way you can see this movie in widescreen, the way it was meant to be seen.
Can I say Roger Moore is great?
