Comments about Jack The Ripper (MOD):

It is one of the best portrayals and theories about Jack the Ripper. It was made for TV and accordingly the scenes appear to end abruptly on occassion, but it was a 2-night mini-series and a really good movie. It has a few graphic scenes not suitable for children but well worth adding to your personal library.

Comments about Jack The Ripper (MOD):

I've been searching for this title for ages, and am glad that it's been made available. The picture and sound quality are excellent, especially as this was made for British Television originally. It orignally aired in two parts, and so each part resides on it's own disc. This film does, it must be said, take a stand as to who the Ripper was. It's as good a theory as any of the others I've read. Like any good mystery, the clues build so that the reveal isn't as shocking as it would have otherwise been, but then if it had come totally out of left field I would have felt cheated. The choice of cover art isn't the best that could have been chosen. The title screen (with the knife) would have made an awesome cover.

Comments about Jack The Ripper (MOD):

The transfer is terrific, but the film itself is not as good as I remembered. Because it was a mini-series and the producers were trying to fill a 4-hour time period, the pacing is slow and there are a lot of unnecessary scenes. Overall, it's entertaining, but it could have easily lost a half hour of its running time.

Comments about Jack The Ripper (MOD):

            A Ripping Good Tale!

It had been 22 years since I first saw this TV mini-series back in 1988. And although I'd forgotten all but a few scenes, and especially the ending, which is a good thing as it was like watching it with fresh eyes, it makes me wonder what ever happened to the entertaining and sometimes great TV mini-series of the 70's, & 80's!
Current TV seems to be sadly lacking in this area!

This was really quite good, and Michael Caine is in top form along with a host of English actors in supporting roles! The women here, I'm afraid to say where pretty much used as canon fodder for the Ripper, so there isn't much character development happening with them, except for Jane Seymour whom has the Lion's share of the women's scenes.

The production values and sets both interior & exterior really convey the time period of London, 1888! One gets a board sense of Old London as huge streets scenes and huge offices are included, painting a bigger canvas!

Stated in the prologue; 100 years ago in 1888 Jack the Ripper started on his crime spree of murdering prostitutes in the White Chapel area on London!
And of course the mini-series itself was made in 1988 capitalizing on the Century factor of the horrid events! I won't give away anything more, but you're in for a treat at 3 plus hours running time & well worth the price of admission!

The made to order DVD-R from the "Warner Bros. Archive Collections" is in full screen and looked very good on a 52" screen, even with the black bars, left & right I still had a very BIG PICTURE!
This was the original format it was filmed in, as made for TV movies & all TV series were filmed for the full screen TV's until widescreens came out!

Color is very good, and I saw no artifacts that could be a distraction!
It played well on a standard DVD player without any problem, so I guess that even though it is a DVD-R Duplication and not a production run on Replication machines, used for most commercial releases, that doesn't seem to factor into the play-back or quality.

It is a little bit disappointing that both Warner's & Universal have decided to "make on demand" DVD-R's instead of wide commercial releases of their historic titles, but I assume the sales figures don't justify the cost. I then have to use caution at these prices, but Jack the Ripper was well worth it & I think I'll watch it all over again for a second time before it hits the shelf!

            Bon chance.

Comments about Jack The Ripper (MOD):

I'm a Sherlock Holmes collector and love Elizabethan era drama and mystery. I've also liked most of Mr Cain's films. This mini series did not dissapoint. The solution to the mystery also seems highly plausible.

Comments about Jack The Ripper (MOD):

I'm thrilled to finally have this excellent TV movie on DVD, and - having watched it now for the first time in years - to see that it's even better than I'd remembered. This is a very high-end television production that looks as though it could have been made for the big screen. There is nothing to really give it away as TV fare, aside from its 1.33:1 aspect ratio.

The DVD presentation is wonderful, with picture quality and audio quality both being excellent. Having only seen this on TV years and years ago, I can't say I ever recall it looking this good. The atmospheric cinematography is beautifully showcased, and the strength of the film itself couldn't be better. Great performances from Michael Caine, Armand Assante, Jane Seymour, and a host of others, and solid writing and direction.

This remains, to this day, my favorite Jack the Ripper film, and I'm delighted to finally own it on DVD.

I enjoyed this movie very much. The only bad thing i can say about it, is that it can only be played on a non recording single dvd. There are not many dvd players like that anymore. You might want to change this if this is a popular movie. I know alot of people that enjoyed this film and who love Michael Caine.
