In Caliente

A pal whisks Manhattan Madness critic Larry MacArthur 3,000 miles away from a husband-hunting honey to Agua Caliente. What neither gent knows is that performer Rita Gomez is there - and she'd love to get revenge for the critical slam Larry gave her.

    Comments about In Caliente:

If you can get used to the rapid delivery of Pat O'Brien, you will enjoy this film. Some good songs, and an elaborate production number "The Lady in Red"

    Interesting and enjoyable.

    Comments about In Caliente:

This movie has wonderful music written by Allie Wrubel and Harry Warren. These songs were many times heard on classic "Merrie Melody" and "Looney Tune" cartoons of the 1930's-1950's. Some of the most famous songs are "The Lady in Red" and "Muchacha". The story is fun, lighthearted, and interesting. It was filmed in Mexico at the famous "Caliente" Resort in Tijuana. Today, the casino is gone. Nevertheless, the film captures wonderful pictures and memories of this lovely place. Delores Del Rio and Glenda Farrell steal the show! Winifred Shaw sings "The Lady in Red" and does a fantastic job! It's great that all this can finally be watched on DVD. It would have been much nicer if a better job had been done with cleaning and remastering for picture and sound quality. Also, there are not many "extras" on the DVD. It comes very plain for such an important piece of film history. I would recommend this product to anybody who appreciates old movies!

Horton and Berkeley Steal the Show

    Comments about In Caliente:

Most of the Warner musicals of this period had thin plots, but this one may be the thinnest of them all. O'Brien and Del Rio don't help matters with their performances: O'Brien is an obnoxious motormouth, while Del Rio is beautiful but boring. Horton gets the most screen time and makes good use of it, delivering a strong comic performance.

Berkeley's two musical numbers are not his best work, but even second-rate Berkeley is worth watching. "The Lady in Red" is the best-known song, and although it suffers from Berkeley's tendency to repeat the lyrics over and over, it is redeemed by the surprise appearance of future radio star Judy Canova. The other number, "Muchacha" is a wild west movie-within-a-movie that is a lot of fun, but ends rather suddenly.

The image is very sharp with excellent grey tones and a very thin layer of tiny white speckles. The audio is clear and crisp.
