"This is a sowah beeta lemon. And when you bite into this sowah, sowah, beeta, beeta, sowah, beeta, sowah, beeta, beeta, sowah sowah leemon, you will see that the taste will be sowah and beeta from this sowah, sowah, beeta, beeta, sowah, beeta lemon!" HAHAHAHA!! Man, this movie is a hoot. When I was in grade school back in the 60s, I remember drawing a picture of the eyeball with lightening bolts coming out of it. It's amazing how much hokiness small children will overlook. I used to love this movie back then. I'm tickled that Warner Brothers Archives released this. It's a real trip down memory lane. Incredible. I'm still awaiting the Screaming Skull! Thanks WB!

    Tawdry and lurid, but fun!

It is great to have access to a blast from my past. That being said, for a no-frills DVD the price is too high. I only purchased it when it went on sale.

A Perfect Example of a Grade B Film

Comments about Hypnotic Eye, The (1960):

"The Hypnotic Eye" is a perfect example of the "grade B" second feature that many of us are old enough to remember. I remember seeing this in the movies when I was ten years old. It scared me plenty and I always remembered it. Seeing it now, it is sort of a low budget mediocrity. But is still is kind of scary (especially if you have not seen it before.)
The basic plot revolves around a series of beautiful women who are mutilating and defacing themselves for no apparent reason. (The film opens with a woman washing her hair over a lit oven and having her hair and face catch on fire. Later on we have another woman wash her face with acid, etc. etc.) None of the women have any idea why they have done it and it takes the pretty girlfriend of the not very bright detective handling the case to realize that it has something to do with a rather sleazy hypnotist appearing in town.
The black and white film is low budget like most "grade B" scond features and the acting is rather mediocre. Despite it being a short film, it still has some padding such as one totally irrelevant scene wherein an old beatnik recites an incomprehensible poem. There is also a too long scene near the end where the hypnotist hypnotizes the entire audience of the crumby, rundown theater he is appearing in and the audience in the theater watching the film as well. (This really does not work very well and many have compared it to the gimmicks of the films of the "Master Showman" the great William Castle.)
In conclusion, this is a mediocre thriller that, for the most part, will keep your interest up. It would make a good double-feature with another Warner Archive film "The Couch."

Comments about Hypnotic Eye, The (1960):

Well done suspense thriller. Oddly fills up the short film time with a long Beatnik poetry scene and a way too long magician's act near the end. But the rest of the movie is great fun.

A very cheesy exploitation flick. Decent cast featuring a lovely Alison Hayes makes it watchable--just don't take it seriously!

Comments about Hypnotic Eye, The (1960):

"You CANNOT move your honds!" So shouts lead Jacques Bergerac in a VERY French accent to a rapt audience in the misogynistic "B" shocker "The Hypnotic Eye."
This movie scared us all to DEATH when we were kids. Seeing it again after all these years, it still shocks with it's gruesome depiction of self-mutilation. BUT, we get to see gorgeous Allie Hayes playing (what else?) the baddest of bad-girls in this stroll down memory (nightmare) lane...

I found the picture quality nice for a remastered film, still there are lots of white specks, a few bad frames, and the audio track is "good".
WB Archive has done well with this cool "B Movie"!
                    Enjoy!

I bought this movie because as a child, my older brother made me watch it and I was only about 7 at the time. I could not sleep for a week! I never forgot about this movie; so this tells me it had an impact on my movie going experience as a child. When I found out the name of it as an adult, I just had to see it again to see what scared me so much. The movie is campy, and the acting is not so great; but the story line of the movie, in my opinion does have merit. I do not recommend it for children. As an adult watching it, I did not have nightmares, but it did remind me of the great movies that were made; with no need for total gore and blood. You can be scared and frightened in a good way without having to see it in living color and so grossly put on the screen

Comments about Hypnotic Eye, The (1960):

Belongs to its time period of genre(read:exploitation) filmmaking like few others.
Characters in this horror pic are just slightly
                      above one dimensional,but that's fairly
irrelevant. A poor man's gimmick B without the
corny William Castle flair or touches....BUT
an indescribable viewing experience. Casting is against type in some instances and just off the mark in others. Sum total: unease with a soupcon
                      of quease.
