House on 56th Street, The

A brisk, decades-spanning melodrama that links the big turns of Peggy Martin's life. Peggy sacrifices her happiness and her home for that of a young woman in debt who will never know Peggy is her supposedly long-dead mother.

Comments about House on 56th Street, The:

While Kay Francis is unfairly overlooked these days and although many who remember her consider her films merely "weepers," this film shows the broad range of her acting skill. The lady ages gracefully and believably throughout this melodrama, delivering a deeply moving performance worthy of an award.

Comments about House on 56th Street, The:

This is an interesting film: about a woman whose life is irrevocably altered. I like how the movie takes place over several decades. The viewer gets to see different aspects of the Kay Francis character. It's interesting to watch her character react and adapt to life's circumstances. It's a pre-Code film, so the narrative unfolds in a less predictable, sometimes surprising way.

It's been a couple of days since I watched The House On 56th Street--and I'm still thinking about it. That's a sure sign of a good film. Nice print, good audio too. My only wish is that there had been more of Gene Raymond in the movie( I'm a fan ).

Comments about House on 56th Street, The:

Thanks so much for the new Kay Francis releases. She has many fans who have been waiting - well - almost forever for more of her films to be released.

We'd love to have all her Warners' films available but especially CONFESSION!
