    Comments about Heat's On, The:

This is the picture that caused Mae West to drop out of the movies for 27 years. She was snookered into making this movie by director Ratoff, who then changed the script and made her the villain. West angrily rewrote her part, which caused the rest of the script to be rewritten (during production) and the end result is an untidy mess of a story.

The good news is that much of the film's 1:19 running time is taken up with nine very pleasant musical numbers. The bad news is that Mae is only in two of them. Three of the numbers feature Xavier Cugat's latin orchestra, two numbers feature singer-pianist Hazel Scott and one comedy number is done by Moore. The remaining number, a love duet in a canoe, is the weakest of the nine.

Although West is only onscreen for about half the movie, we get a nice dose of her legendary eye-rolling, hip swinging and clever one-liners. Her "seduction" scene with Moore is the non-musical highlight of the movie. If you are a Mae West fan, you will want this DVD.

The image quality is very good (except for a light scratch that appears along the right edge for a while), and the sound is accurate for the period.
